Game Premise
The modern world is ruled by humanity – humanity has spread across the globe, an overwhelming presence on every continent and in every corner of the globe. Yet this was not always the case.
For millennia other species’ ruled in dominance, some we know of, others we don’t. There are thousands, if not millions of years that are unaccounted for by people of science, far too much history on this planet to ever be properly documented.
What is known, though, is that the earth moves in cycles – as one dominant type rises, so another falls into abeyance. And this is what happened to the ‘others’ – the angels, the demons, the fae... Their day of dominance is past, long gone. And yet they have clung to existence, refusing to pass into extinction, instead doing what they must to survive.
And survive they have, albeit in a lesser form, finding new homes in the uninhabited, remoter corners of the world. And for millennia, they so existed, until the rise of humanity. For humans spread the way that no other species ever has done. And, as humanity rose and multiplied, it became apparent that this seemingly helpless species was anything but – rather humanity emerged as aggressive, territorial and extremely intolerant of difference – even within its own species. They did not live in harmony with their surroundings, or remain within their own territory. Instead they changed the environment to suit their needs and expanded continuously. Anything which threatened their mastery of the environment was ruthlessly hunted down. Any members of their own species who were different were either likewise hunted down, or made outcasts, if their abilities became apparent to their communities. And so it was that those species who had lived on for millennia since the downfall of their kind, living apart from the rest of the world, found it increasingly difficult to do so.
Some species’ adapted, integrating with humanity to a greater or lesser degree, giving up on a policy of isolation and hiding instead in plain sight. Others continued to hide, moving to increasingly remote areas where they could continue to live in uninterrupted solitude.
One such area is what is today known as the Upper Peninsula (UP) in Michigan. Even in modern times it has remained a quiet area, mostly overlooked by the rest of the United States and definitely mostly unheard of in the rest of the world. It is a mostly rural area – even its largest city has a population of under 20,000. It is the perfect retreat for those wishing to pass mostly under the radar.
Or, at least, it was. The problem is, possibly, that it is a little too perfect and with the population of humanity ever increasing and the availability of remote areas steadily disappearing, the UP became a hotspot for the supernatural. And whereas in the past the population was so negligible as to pass unnoticed, these days that is becoming harder and harder to do. And when humanity notices a problem? The hunters come. And when the hunters come and they come in numbers? Those who do not conform die – and die in numbers.
And this isn’t the only problem. Nobody knows when it started, because nobody was looking for it. It is possible that there was a pre-existing power in this region. It is possible that there was a power here that attracted those of supernatural origin or leanings here in the first place. Nobody knows. But what is now undeniable is that there is power in this region at a very unnatural level, power enough for some beings to sense, enough for some beings to feed off. And it seems to be growing.
It is growing and it is approaching its limit.
Things are going wrong – very wrong. The number of supernatural attacks is going up; the stability of society is going down. And it’s no longer just in Marquette – things seem to be deteriorating around the world – and whilst officially the supernatural still Does Not Exist, that is a line that is becoming less and less believable.
It seems only a matter of time until all hell breaks lose. The question is – are you ready for the fight?
