Appearance

Originally Elsie had brown hair. As soon as she was old enough to buy hair dye, however, she dyed it black. It hasn’t changed since (mostly through her shifting ability; see powers) and it’s grown down to her mid-back (naturally, not through shapeshifting). Her eyes are also her tell; they change color and she has no control over this. She wears black lipstick and dresses in--you guessed it--mainly black clothes. Occasionally she can be seen in something besides “goth gear” but this is the exception to the rule. Elsie stands at around 5’7” and is slim.
On an interesting note, Elsie was technically a late bloomer. While she made small changes to herself to appear to have hit puberty since age twelve to fit in, she didn’t change hormonally until age fifteen. Since then she has allowed her body to show naturally.
Tell: Her tell is her “rainbow” eyes. Elsie’s eyes change color randomly; she has no control over it. Sometimes the change is triggered by her emotions or stress level, or the color can relate to that, but not always. She usually explains this to others as putting in colored contact lenses (even throughout the day). The only way she knows that her eyes are about to change color is a pain in her abdomen (see weaknesses for details), and she usually heads somewhere private to “change” her “contact lenses.” If she can’t go somewhere she just rubs her eyes or looks away, and if anyone happens to notice, she denies that her eyes were a different color that day. She doesn’t wear real contact lenses to cover this up because they irritate her eyes too much.

Special Abilities

Swims like a fish and can ice skate beautifully

Supernatural Affinity (Species/Group)
Half-demon (seiirim)
Supernatural Affinity (Powers)

Shapeshifting—she cannot change everything at once, just small things or a few things at a time, like small changes in height (up to two inches but if she grows she looks skinnier and if she shrinks she looks fatter); hair length and color; she can look as if she’s wearing makeup; she cannot change her eye color at will.

Personality

Elsie’s the kind to sit in the back of the classroom and just watch everyone else quietly. Even when her nose is stuck in some book or another she’s careful to watch the people around her in her peripheral vision. She may not socialize with her peers much, but she likes to learn about them—if nothing else, she can hold it against them if she finds out something juicy. On the more innocent side, if one of them were to talk to her, she would at least know who they are and something about them. She isn’t often the one to engage others in conversation, though.
If she feels cornered, she tends to lash out, sometimes physically. When she’s upset she loses control. If she were to ever get too angry her eyes would glow. She also has “anger attacks” or “anger flashes” where, without any provocation, she suddenly becomes incredibly angry. Usually when this happens she buries her head in her hands or knees if in a fetal position and tries to wait it out. It isn’t a good idea to try and talk to her during an episode or she may lash out.
She hates her mother for abandoning her. She wishes her roommate (so to speak) were around more so she’d have somebody to talk to. Elsie wants a friend, but she’d rather have someone approach her because it shows that they’re interested in her; otherwise she feels like she’s just bothering them. She hates being rejected. She feels that she can’t be rejected from a group or a person if she wasn’t trying to join them in the first place. Despite how much she wants someone to talk to, Elsie won’t talk to a counselor; she doesn’t like being psychoanalyzed unless she’s the one doing it to herself.
There are two kinds of people she’s especially awkward around: “perfect people” and guys. If someone even looks like they have a perfect life she doesn’t like them and feels an almost instinctive urge to try and bring them down a peg or two. This may be a reflection of her demon side. As for guys, well…she has trouble talking to them due to the hormonal changes she went through recently. Since she just started taking notice of guys through a woman’s eyes, she isn’t sure how to act around them. She’s especially unsure of herself around guys she finds attractive. She feels more comfortable arguing or bickering with them, oddly enough. No one ever said Elsie made sense…

History

Elsie was the product of a one-night stand between her mother, Laura, a dedicated businesswoman, and a man she met at a convention. Laura never bothered learning his name or his exact occupation; she was just fulfilling her needs. She had no idea she had bedded a demon in disguise. Nine months later, when she gave birth to a little girl with color-changing eyes, she started questioning that night; she never did figure out what he was, though.
She was born with a strange marking on her stomach. At first Laura thought it was a birthmark, but when baby Elise started screaming whenever her eyes changed color, Laura realized it was something more. The doctors couldn’t explain it. When Elsie was old enough to start school, Laura tried putting contacts on Elsie’s eyes but Elsie wouldn’t stop rubbing at them. It was affecting her schoolwork and Laura finally gave up, fearing they would give her daughter an infection. Instead she gave her dark sunglasses and told the school that her daughter had a rare eye disease which involve light sensitivity and therefore had to wear sunglasses all day.
When Elsie was in elementary school her mother earned a promotion. This meant that she would be traveling more often. Elsie became well acquainted with babysitters and nannies. Her older brother would occasionally watch her, but he had school to attend as well and later, work.
When she was in middle school she tried dye her hair black. Before she had a chance to apply the color herself, her hair changed in front of her eyes. Her family was dismayed at the color change. Elsie didn’t care though; she didn’t want to be some princess in brightly colored clothes like her mother’s friends’ kids. She wore black as often as she was allowed but her mother ordered the babysitters and nannies to make sure she wore some color as well. They were also supposed to make sure she didn’t come into contact with any hair dye, either, but for some reason her hair never went back to brown. By that point Elsie understood that she had some shapeshifting abilities. She could change her hair color and length at will. She could make small changes that made her look like she was wearing makeup. She obeyed her mother’s orders regardless, hoping to make her happy so she’d come home more often.
Eventually Laura was promoted again, but this time she had to travel overseas. She moved Elsie in with Laura’s mother, Janet. Elsie liked Janet well enough but she started developing anger and abandonment issues. She started losing friends at school. She stopped talking to her older brother, who had always seemed a bit awkward around her anyway. She got into a fight at school and, losing control over herself, put the other girl in the hospital.
Janet was old and not in the best health. After only three short years she died. Laura came back from her new position long enough to bury her mother and contact an old friend, Ethan, who lived in Marquette. Elsie now had to move in with a complete stranger with a busy work schedule of his own and start over in a new place. To make matters worse, she hit puberty at about the same time that she moved in with Ethan. It was the last straw; she gave up wearing jeans and anything brightly colored and replaced them with black. Laura told Elsie she’d be back for her when she graduated high school and take her to Europe, but Elsie didn’t believe her anymore. She didn’t look forward to this new school and this new town at all.

Weaknesses

Cursed. Unknown to Elsie, there was once an attempt to seal her father’s powers; it didn’t work on him, but the curse was passed on to his daughter. There is a pale marking on her skin, around her bellybutton, that looks like a tribal sun-shaped scar. Any time she changes something about her appearance supernaturally, she feels pain in the area around that marking. Usually it’s a sharp pain that lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes. On at least one occasion she’s coughed up blood.
Cluelessness. Elsie knows she can change shape and that she’s strong, but she has no idea that she’s a half-demon and that her father was the demon. Because of this she doesn’t know to watch her back or protect herself from anything or anyone that might come after her just for what she is and who her father is.
Loneliness. She doesn’t know her father, and her mother, for all intents and purposes, abandoned her. Her brother hasn’t contacted her in two years and the man she lives with spends most of his time away from home. Not to mention, because of the way she dresses people tend to leave her alone, and she has a difficult time approaching people to try and make friends because she’s afraid she’ll lose them.
Incomplete control. Part of her shapeshifting abilities are tied to her subconscious. Sometimes, just by thinking about a hairstyle, she automatically shifts. She has to be very careful about what she thinks, or her body may take it literally. Additionally, she cannot willfully change the color of her eyes; they change on their own. The harder she tries to change their color, the more likely they are to change to an unnatural appearance—yellow, red, maybe cat’s eyes; anything that looks demonic or otherwise supernatural.
Anger flashes. When she’s having an “anger attack” it causes her eyes to either change or glow, which then activates her cursed marking and causes her pain.
Lack of control. This is different from incomplete control, because this is more of a personality issue. When Elsie sees red, it’s all she sees. If she loses her temper she tends to get violent, and if she does, all she can focus on is hurting the other person or exacting a certain amount of revenge. She pays no attention to anything that happens to her. She doesn’t notice anything that’s happened to her until she’s calmed down.

Strengths

Balance. She has never tripped unless she was pushed by someone.
Eidetic memory. Otherwise known as a photographic memory. She remembers things she’s seen in detail (though only visually; for some reason, she can’t remember everything she hears perfectly). This was inherited from her human mother.
Intelligent. While it may be connected to her eidetic memory, Elsie is a very smart girl and makes good grades in school.
