Finally Connecting

Finding a pay phone while trying to stay hidden was a pain in the ass, so eventually Dorian resorted to using a cell. It wasn't his own, but the guy he'd taken it from wasn't likely to miss it, and at the moment he didn't care. Someone else could deal with the international charges. His only issue was the limited battery life, but he was hoping it would hold for at least a couple of days. By then, maybe things would have settled down.

A Visit and a Favor

Caleb was awake, sitting in mostly silence, only the sounds from the rooms around him filtering through. Someone had their television on loud. He however, didn't have his on at all. He was busy hunched over his newly aquired sketchbook. He'd already killed a lot of the pages in it, and knew that at the rate he was going, he'd be done with it within a day or so. It was the only thing he could concentrate on, and if he didn't have that, his mind started grinding over too much bullshit. He didn't want to be thinking about any of it, so--drawing. He'd done several of Leija, Peyton, a few distant sketches of Ten and Jamie. Currently he was working on one of a girl he didn't know. It was a shot from behind her, so she was mostly in shadow, detail getting washed out and drawn in blacks. She was standing in a cemetery, the tombstones stuck up at odd angles. Old, crumbling, a wrought iron fence gating her in. Where she'd come from, he didn't know. But he figured it was healthier than drawing people he knew. He was feeling creepy and stalkery already, so he needed to curb that shit.

Dorian was thankful that he and Mathias had gotten back early enough from their wandering to allow him to go see Caleb. Being quite aware that they would move Caleb as soon as he seemed well enough, he wanted the time they could still have together unsupervised, seeing as how he wasn't sure what would change when they moved Caleb to the psyche ward. He'd not wanted to think too much on that point, yet there it was, not changing. Hopefully it would help Caleb more than he'd been able to. The door was open when Dorian walked in, quiet for a moment as he observed his brother, then eventually speaking up. "I didn't know you drew," he said, the thought passing through that there was a lot he didn't know about Caleb. Somehow he needed to learn it though. Wanted to, in fact, if his little brother would open up a bit. Dorian realized they were all bad at that.

Caleb spent a lot more time walking around until he found himself outside of Nevermore. He sort of half considered walking by and not stopping in for a good ten minutes before he said fuck it and went in. He couldn't quite get his head off of grinding endlessly in circles, and well...maybe talking to Dorian would get his mind off of things. Or something. Whatever. In he went, and he didn't go fully inside immediately, listening to see if anyone else was in the shop already.

Wednesdays seemed to last forever, but that probably had something to do with the fact that Dorian was there for a full twelve hours, instead of just five or six. How many had it been now? Seven? Dorian tried not to look at the clock too often. That made it even worse. There was no one in the store, or hadn't been till the little bell at the front rang. Dorian stepped out from the back, heading quietly towards the front. If he had a customer, he needed to be somewhere they could find him. "Good afternoon," he called out, not yet seeing who'd come in.

a conversation without shouting

Dorian wasn't scheduled to work on Sundays, but he went in anyways, just for a reason to get out of the house. There were too many people in such a small space, but he'd never have guessed his little two bedroom would fill up so quickly. His guest bedroom held a pretty permanent guest, at least for a year, and his dining room had acquired an occupant as well. With Mathias on the sofa, the only room without a person sleeping in it was the kitchen. If asked, Dorian would turn away anyone else, no matter what their reason. He would not put up a guest on his kitchen floor.

Stocking books wasn't exactly a stress relieving activity, but it had to be done. He'd sent Harper on a lunch break, just to have the store to himself for a bit. A few customers lingered, one ringing the bell to check out. Dorian left the books and moved down to the register, ringing up a set of tarot cards and a book on magic in bed. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. High school girls had no business messing with that stuff unless they were looking to kill their boyfriends.

Dorian was in the kitchen, staring at the window. It wasn't fixed, but the pieces had been put back together. It had to have taken an insane amount of time and, even if it wouldn't do for a solution, he couldn't imagine who would have done it. He really didn't think Caleb had that kind of patience, which led him to Tensiel. The girl was just crazy enough to try and piece glass shards back together, wasn't she? He leaned back against the counter, examining it, his bowl of cereal temporarily forgotten in his hand.

A Little Fight

"Home," Dorian called out as he shut the door to the house. The day had gone fast, what with talking to Mathias and all. Now he was just glad to be back home. With Caleb's schedule as of late, he didn't exactly expect him to be there, but he still felt the need to announce he was there, just in case. Furthermore, he didn't know if Tensiel was around and he preferred not to have her sneak up on him.

Caleb did happen to be home, and he sort of half winced when he heard his brother arrive. He still wasn't sure what exactly to do about things, and was just hoping that he could get away without being found out. "Hey." he called back. He'd been sort of sleeping on Ten's mattress in the dining room, but got up and quickly moved up the hall so that wasn't obvious.

Not Really A Lecture

After talking to Eury, Dorian felt significantly better... at least about Tensiel. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but if the girl showed back up at his house again, then he wouldn't worry so much about taking her in. That taken care of, he had yet to talk to Caleb about it, though they'd had little time to catch each other since that morning. Evening set in and Dorian knocked on Caleb's door, a better start than he'd had that morning. Time to cool down definitely helped a bit.

Caleb glanced up then got up to open the door. "Hey." he said, sort of knowing this was coming, but that didn't make it easier to deal with. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously, and went to sit back down on his bed.

When Caleb didn't return for dinner, Dorian thought nothing of it, sure he'd show eventually. When it got to be ten, he got annoyed. At midnight, he was just plain pissed. And by one, he was an odd mix of worried and murderous. Sometime around two he fell asleep on the couch, close to the door in case Caleb came home. Dorian woke the next morning with a sense of panic, wondering how quickly his mother would tear him to shreds for losing her youngest in the first week he arrived. On the off chance that Caleb had come in so quietly that Dorian hadn't woken up, Dorian ran down to Caleb's room, entering without knocking. It didn't even register that there was more than one person in the room. All that mattered was that the bed was occupied. "I can't believe you," he said, anger flaring now that he knew his brother was home and safe. He didn't give a damn if he woke him up.

not such a great start

Caleb was crashed out on the couch. He'd actually been crashed out on the couch most of the day. He was pretty nocturnal by nature, so it wasn't really unusual for him to be sleeping late in the day. He just wasn't used to doing it here. Which had meant ever since he'd been dumped on his older brother's doorstep that he'd been groggy and cranky as he'd gotten used to the new place. Town. Whatever. It all sucked.
