A Little Chaos Could Be Fun
Submitted by middleground on Fri, 05/08/2009 - 05:16.Who: Dorian and Mathias
Where: Nevermore
When: Morning
While Dorian didn't exactly put in enough hours at Nevermore to consider what he was doing as 'work', he did make a daily appearance and check to make sure everything was in working order. The whole book-renting thing was working out really well, since more people could afford to rent the books than buy them. People were desperate for information and he didn't blame them. He would be too, if he hadn't been brought up to believe in all the crazy shit that was out there. Even then, his beliefs didn't cover ghosts suddenly wandering the world. It was the one question commonly asked that he still didn't have a good solid answer for, but life went on, and he'd never had all the answers to begin with.
Working on the Rules
Submitted by middleground on Sat, 11/15/2008 - 05:54.Who: Dorian and Mathias
Where: Somewhere in Colorado
When: Around noon
Since his conversation with Caleb on the night of the new moon, Dorian had been relatively quiet. Internally, he'd assumed the worst, taking it as confirmation surrounding the worst of the fears he held about himself. He wasn't sure what he'd become or what to do about it, which was almost as bad as pretending to be something he wasn't. If he'd found himself on his quest for enlightenment, if that was indeed what he'd been doing, then he wasn't pleased with the result. Maybe he'd have been better going insane in Marquette, running Nevermore day in and day out.
Sitting at the table, he went through the task of cleaning his gun, something he should have done yesterday. He'd put it off, initially annoyed by his claws. Even after they were gone, it took him a while to get back around to it. Now they had all the time he could need and he wasn't sure what else to do.
Lectures Can Wait
Submitted by middleground on Thu, 10/16/2008 - 21:47.Who: Dorian and Mathias
Where: Cell phones via car and train
When: Evening
It hadn't been all that difficult to hop on a train, but it had been a pain in the ass staying on one that was going the direction Dorian wanted to go. Seeing as how he hadn't actually bought a ticket, he rode in the carrier cars, along with whatever was being transported across the continent. Sometimes the trains would stop, at which point he'd jump on another, hoping to get to his destination faster.
Spotting his tracker was easy, as the demon had to jump from train to train to keep up. Dorian pretended not to notice, and the demon kept his distance. He assumed there would be more to follow, that the bulk of them were all two steps behind, probably traveling by much more conventional means. While he still had a long way to go, Dorian was finally at a point where he could relax, and he opened his phone, this time dialing up his older brother.

Needs Must

Where: The Lockwood Residence
When: Evening
Dorian's day had seemed rather full, and by the time he headed home, he was starting to think an early bedtime would be nice. Or perhaps that was due to the anticipation of seeing Delilah again and he wasn't tired at all. Not yet, at least. He couldn't seem to make up his mind. After leaving Nevermore, he'd stopped by the hospital to visit Caleb, gone to the store to pick up dinner, then headed home. Groceries had gone into the house, but the toy chest remained in his car. He'd rather not have Mathais end up locked out when he got home, even if he'd be filling his brother in on the toys anyways. He started dinner, then collapsed on the couch, flipping on the tv for a bit. It was a nice change of pace to let his mind go numb, though he knew it couldn't last all that long.
Mathias had been avoiding the hospital all day - there was no way he was going to visit Caleb until he had something to tell his brother, since he knew the guy would be all over him about Leija and he wasn't big on directly lying. He much preferred to sidestep questions and tell half-truths, make people believe they'd heard something other than what he'd actually said. Dorian could visit today - he hadn't been called to look for Leija and could fob Caleb off a lot better than Math would be able to as a result.
Playing Catch Up
Submitted by middleground on Sun, 02/10/2008 - 19:23.Who: Dorian and Mathias
Where: The Lockwood Residence
When: 3 p.m.
It should have surprised Dorian to find Mathias asleep on the couch, but it didn't. Apparently his brother had nothing else to do but encourage the ongoing jet lag. Dropping his keys on the counter, Dorian grabbed a coke from the fridge and plopped himself down in one of the living room chairs. "Hey Math. Wake up," he said, then took a sip of his drink. He wasn't sure if Mathias was just snoozing or completely out, but if he had to ask again, it would come with the hit of a pillow.
Mathias grunted and rolled over sluggishly, taking his pillow with him, keeping it under his head, the blanket twisting round his hips as he turned. He'd long ago learned the value of catching sleep where and when you could and the fact it was well into the day didn't bother him in the slightest. He wasn't ready to get up yet.
"Wake up," Dorian said, this time a little more forcefully, the pillow pulling hard out of Mathias' hands and into Dorian's. "You know, if you sleep all day, you're never gonna get over your jet lag." Not that Dorian cared at the moment, but more that he'd wanted an audience with his brother over 24-hours ago. He wasn't waiting any longer, his lack of politeness due to a growing lack of sleep.
Denial with a Side of Guilt

Where: Phone Calls, The Happy Medium
When: Early Evening
Dorian sat out in the grass behind his house, leaning up against a tree as he stared at his cell phone. He'd rather be outside than in. The air had cooled, the first hint of autumn on the breeze and fresh air in his lungs. Not dusty, like the bookshop back room. The only thing there to make him uncomfortable was his phone and the call he needed to make. Dorian dialed Mathias' number and held the phone to his ear, waiting as it rang.
He hadn't worked out what he was going to say. Every time he tried, it came out different, but he didn't want to stall any longer. This wasn't something he could put off, as the longer he waited, the worse it would be. He wasn't even happy with the fact that Mathias had left in the first place.

Caleb and I have gone off for a bit of sibling bonding. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s been far too long and we should get to know each other better.
We’ll be back tomorrow.

Things We Missed

Wednesdays were ridiculously long. Twelve hour shifts at Nevermore should be outlawed, though he didn't have enough business to hire anyone else on part time. With he and Harper working full time, they put in just the right number of hours, but Wednesday was her day off. It meant he had to work after dark, that he had to leave the store while wearing sunglasses. As ridiculous as he looked, it served it's purpose, but he couldn't drive in the dark. Dorian slipped the sun glasses off his face as he entered his home, closing his eyes for a moment as he sighed.
He'd planned to go play poker tonight. He wasn't actually sleepy, just... tired. But some real social interaction would be good for him and would probably make him feel better the day after. All he had to do was grab a bite to eat and get his ass over there. It went till after midnight, so he wasn't exactly late. He just wouldn't be the first to arrive.
Messages Between Brothers
Submitted by middleground on Thu, 08/02/2007 - 17:33.Who: Dorian and Mathias
Where: On the phone
When: Morning
"Bro, bro - pick up! Come on - pick up, pick up. You even there? Aww, hell. I'll ring back."
Dorian had been in the shower when the phone rang, getting ready for work. It wasn't until he was actually walking there that he heard the message. From the way it sounded, Mathias was in trouble. Dorian hurriedly called back, aware he couldn't do shit if he was, but not wanting to wait another minute. "Pick up," he muttered as the phone rang.
