puddles suck

Drew walked up the slushy sidewalk, hands crammed down into his pockets, and his head down against the wind. It wasn't cold, really, just windy, and he felt soaked. Walking around Marquette while there was a huge melt of massive amounts of snow was messy at best, and with as many deep puddles as he'd trod through by accident, he was thoroughly uncomfortable. But, he didn't have a whole lot of choice in being out and about, either, so he was just...being out and about, only wet and gross feeling.

He'd gotten himself an apartment, though the term 'apartment' could probably be swapped with 'compartment' considering the size of the place. He could just about turn around and hook up his computer, and that was it. Okay, it was slightly larger than that, but it didn't feel larger than that. Especially after the much more upscale accommodations he'd been used to in the past few years. But he was on the run at the moment, and when one was on the run, you didn't get choices in fine living spaces. You took what you could get, and called it good. Either way he was sort of just out for a walk, familiarizing himself with the area, as well as making some sort of attempt to get a bit of food for himself. He was entirely lost in thought, and went to step off of a curb when his foot slid out from beneath him and he found himself sitting in a slusy puddle of doom.

Jocelyn still wasn't used to a normal sleep schedule, but she'd told Doc to meet her early in the morning so she was here. Tucked into a corner both in the back she was doing her best to prep herself for this meeting. Her palms were pressed flat on the table her coffee untouched in front of her. She really shouldn't be nervous about meeting the man she was sleeping with.

Depressed didn't even come close to covering how Jocelyn was feeling all afternoon while she tried to trudge through her shift at Babylon. In the end she'd broken at least three glasses and gotten more than several dirty looks from both patrons and coworkers. She was in a haze and couldn't seem to find her way out of it.

It had kept her up late the previous night but Jocelyn had put together what she needed to hopefully help Grayson out with his spirit visitor. She didn't tell him, or Doc for that matter, but something about the climate with the ghosts lately made her wonder if the standard defenses against them would even hold up. What if they were immune now that they are all visible? It wasn't worth getting caught up on. If the wards she put in place didn't work, they'd go about it a different route.

If nothing it had been a long day. Jocelyn was bleary-eyed from staring at older texts and making notes all day, working dilligently on her task of designing wards for the others. She wasn't usually the type to completely throw herself into her work without breaks as she had today, but a few things had set her off and working was a sufficient distraction from them.

In the end, Doc had opted against Chinese for dinner, though he hadn't strayed far. Thai worked just as well, and he had a procession of cartons and plates laid out on the coffee table next to a cooler of beers and sodas. He'd made the necessary round of calls earlier, cluing the others into the when and where, but it all felt so odd.

It was too early for a drink, even if Doc was hanging around a bar. He'd returned to Babylon not long after opening, a safe and quiet spot for most people, but one that was giving him some anxious feelings as he waited. At least there'd been coffee to occupy him as he composed his thoughts, though really? No matter how much time Doc ever had to prepare, it always seemed wasted when he actually found himself in the moment he'd been waiting for.

It took three hours and four outfits, but Jocelyn finally dug her coat out of her closet (had it really been warm the last time she left Babylon?) and took Eris' advice to get out. Her first few steps outside caught her off guard because she'd grown so accustom to the fact that it was rarely cool in Babylon. Outside though, winter was in full force and she had to turn her collar up to the wind. She shivered a little, but trudged on, doing her best to not look as depressed as she felt.

After Doc had left with sweet goodbye kisses she'd buzzed around her room, picking things up and putting them back down, trying to focus on something, but really just reliving the previous night over and over again.

Cheating at Carnival Games

default user pic

Who: Brian and Jocelyn
Where: The carnival
When: Late afternoon

Once Brian realized that today was the last day for the carnival, that was it. He had to go. There wouldn't be much better of a distraction from Domino's damned note than carnival games, music, and bad food. And, as he wandered through the last-minute crowd and devoured a hot dog, he had to say that he did feel better. Surrounded by people, all having a good time, and the cheesy but still fun sights and sounds of a traveling faire all conspired to put him in a much better mood.

Hot dog finished, and not quite ready to go grab himself some cotton candy or something yet, Brian paused at one of the many "toss something over this something else and win a prize!" games. He was trying to decide how much he really wanted to play versus how much he really wanted to win. The prizes all looked pretty silly, unless you had someone to win them for-- and Domino most certainly didn't count-- but it would be child's play to win one of he wanted to.

Who: Jocelyn and Alex
Where: Outside of Babylon, then inside of Babylon
When: 10:30pm

She'd been stood up. It took her awhile to admit it, sitting on the curb outside of Babylon, wondering if maybe she got the night wrong. Or the time. But no. As humiliating as it was, she'd been stood up. By a vampire. Good Lord, the enjoyment Val would get out of that if he ever found out...Jocelyn didn't even want to think about it. She sat there, her purse next to her on the sidewalk, her chin rested on her arms that were currently crossed upon her drawn up knees as she watched the cars pass by filled with dark, unfamiliar faces. She would have retreated back to her room, but confining herself in solitude, especially with the roses still on her dresser, was simply too depressing. Her first date in years and she gets stood up. It was if another crack in her self-esteem widened and a thousand self-deprecating excuses as to why it happened began to run through her mind.

After a relatively pleasant, and interesting, encounter with Melia again, Alejandro headed for Babylon. He had someone he wanted to talk to, for all he'd really rather not see the place again until his next shift. On Monday. Thank God. At least he'd asked around and found out what room she was in, so maybe he could corner her in there where she'd be the only one to ramble at him.

Except there she was, sitting on the curb. That was unexpected-- and unexpectedly easy. "Hey, waiting for someone?" he asked, coming up towards her rather than Babylon's door.

A Proper Thank You

Who: Jericho and Jocelyn
Where: Jericho's House
When: Thursday, August 30, 2007, 9:00pm

It hadn't taken very long for Jocelyn to find out where Jericho resided. She initially had tried the old-fashioned means by looking through the phone book, but he wasn't listed. Given he was a vampire - and a psychiatrist, she made a few inquiries within Babylon, and to those she knew in town, before finally tracking down his address. She probably could have just called, but it was a rare occasion - or really never - that a guy sent her roses, so she wanted to thank him in person for the kind gesture.

She was well aware of the hours most vampires kept - and even if he was awake during daytime for his patients, she didn't want to interrupt his work so she waited until long after sunset to dress appropriately and head out. With the piece of paper in her hand scrawled with his address, she walked for awhile until she reached Northrup Street. Pausing outside of his house, she gave it a once over, deciding she quite liked it, before she took a breath and headed for the stairs. She could almost hear Val mocking her in her ear, which promptly annoyed her that she was thinking of him at all. Shaking her head, Jocelyn brushed a hand through her hair, took another deep breath and reached out to buzz the intercom.

Welcoming New Employees

Who: Alejandro and Jocelyn

The second day back behind a bar again wasn't quite as shiny and exciting as the first, but Alejandro was okay with that. It was work, it was bringing in money, and it was safe, and he was perfectly happy with that for a while. He didn't have a lot of customers, so early in the day, but that meant he could get to know the bar a little better, make sure he had everything's place memorized.

Right then, though, he was just leaning absently on the bartop, wondering when he ought to go back to visit Melia, trying not to think about that stupid toy block he'd bought that morning-- and subsequently and pointedly left at home before work-- and waiting for someone to call for another drink.

The flowers were delivered a little after noon. It'd been such a surprise that Jocelyn had been insistent that the courier had delivered them to the wrong person. But apparently, yes, they were hers. And they sat on her desk now, the sweet aroma of roses filling her senses as Jocelyn reread the small card that had come with them for the tenth time. To brighten your day as you brightened my night. -Jericho. The good looking vampire that had sat next to her the evening before. They'd had a brief discussion, too brief for her to think she'd made even a blip on his radar. But here she was, standing in her room and staring at dozens of white and red roses.

Who: Jocelyn and Jericho

With it being a fairly slow night, for her at least, Jocelyn took advantage of the quiet time to wander down into the bar area to do a bit of people watching for a bit. The storm outside had been going on for most of the day, but it didn't seem to deter people from leaving the dry confines of their home and getting a drink at Babylon. The conversations were quiet, however, as if the weather had dulled most. Thunder rumbled outside as she walked through the room toward the bar, greeting a few people on her way. Her eyes searched for Val briefly before she took a seat at the end of the bar. A glass of cranberry juice was set in front of her almost instantly, to which she thanked the bartender on duty before shifting and settling her chin in her palm to look around at who was there. A few familiar faces, some new ones. It was always interesting to see what kind of patronage a storm like this one brought into the place.

It had been his first dreamless night in what felt like weeks, and when Dorian rose for work Monday morning, he realized it was the first good night's sleep he'd had since the dreams started. Now that they'd taken their leave, perhaps things could get back to normal, though he still had the toy chest to worry about. Rather than leave it at home, Dorian packed it in the back of his car and drove it to work, setting it on the table in the center of the store. Once he got the shop opened and everything set, he'd get to looking at it, but there were things to attend to before then. The shop had been closed all day Sunday, with both he and Harper down at the mine, and there was a tiny bit of catching up to do.

Who: Val and Jocelyn
Where: Park
When: Late

Jocelyn was aware that it was far too late to be out wandering after dark. If the streets weren't as brightly lit as they were, she would have never stepped outside of Babylon. As it was, she followed the streetlamps until she came to the park. She'd needed some time to be alone. To think. And ever since her last encounter with Val, she'd been having more and more trouble just staying in and reading the way she used too. But she hadn't really dressed up for a night of fun, despite her initial intentions of doing just that. Jeans and her leather jacket, her hair pulled back in a ponytail. There really wasn't anyone out she was looking to impress, that was for damn sure. Her mood had shifted considerably before she'd even left the club. It could have been the argument she'd had with her brother on the phone moments beforehand. It could have been the exhaustion she was beginning to feel with her job. It could have been a lot of things.

She sat on the grass, beneath a tree near one of the streetlamps, her knees drawn up and her hands curled together. She conjured the flames in her hands, held them, let them illuminate her face, and then let them disappear before repeating the process. There weren't many people in the park anymore, at this hour. The ones she could see were far enough away that they'd never get close enough to see the magic, or bother her. She just needed time to work through her mood, and then she would be all right. And then, maybe, she would find something worthwhile to do.

Sleeping hadn't happened again, even after the swim and chat with Melia-- maybe especially after the swim and chat with Melia-- though Alejandro had spent the rest of the night and into the morning in bed trying to will himself asleep again. That never worked, but he kept trying it, anyway, just in case. It's not like he had anything better to do.

Rather than try to sort through the pile of bills that had come during his absence, Alejandro left the house and headed into the main part of town. He needed a job-- a job that paid; though he still hadn't worked out whether he was actually out of both jobs as a result of... the whole mess-- before he could pay most of them. While he could check the classifieds in the paper, he was feeling restless and trolling the streets for "help wanted" signs was more satisfying than circling things in a newspaper.
