Three days
Submitted by blankslate on Tue, 11/24/2009 - 00:13.
Three days. Three days and I'm eighteen, as far as anyone knows. And I don't know what happens afterward, not really. I mean, I know I'm not going anywhere. Mom needs me, Caleb and Dean and Lullaby... well, they don't need me? But I think they'd welcome the help.
So, whatever I don't know? I know that much; I'm staying here. Knowing more would be easier if I knew where everything with Caleb was, which is stupid of me. Like I should be planning my possible future based on a guy. Retard.
Can't
Submitted by blankslate on Wed, 11/18/2009 - 00:20.
Can't sleep. Can't eat. Can't go for a walk (fuck you too, moon). Can't focus on a page long enough to make two words make sense. Can't practice, if I do 'Stallion Tramples the Face' stance one more time I'm gonna break my own legs.
Can't block out Skye when she got grabbed, feet kicking ruts through the snow and down to dirt, like a kid making a snow angel. Can't stop hearing the way her scream got ripped away, filled in with eating sounds preceding every jet of blood. Can't tell my mom, or anyone. People would think it was werewolves, and I can't let them think that.

Attacks had been coming off and on all day, but none enough to get people hurt. It had almost been like the demons were testing the defences of those holed up in the chapel. When a real attack came, it came suddenly, as another window exploded inwards, showering the room with glass as a black shape hurtled through with apparently no thought to the holy ground it would be landing on.

Nic had never considered just what she might do in a literal siege scenario, how she'd react or hold up under the stress. Even if she'd put thought into it before, it wouldn't have lined up with the reality. Not so long ago, the girl had lived for her own bravado, and up until the night she'd seen (and helped kill) a werewolf she'd liked to think that she would be the one kicking ass and taking names. The truth wasn't a disappointment, but it was far from her imagination.

Kaysen was wandering. She'd sort of broken off from the rest of the group as soon as she possibly could. She was just walking, following corridors, and it seemed there was an endless supply of them. She had her map, though it was shoved into her back pocket, ignored for the moment. It wasn't like she minded if she got lost. It was a neat place. Weird, of course, and there were quite a lot of ghosts, most of which didn't seem to want much to do with her so far. But then she'd just kind of waved, and kept about her business.
Turning a corner, she found a room that looked like it used to be a greenhouse or something. It had glass walls and all, so was the ceiling. Snow covered most of it, and she kind of liked the feel of it. Walking inside, she looked up and around, seeing cracks in the glass of one of the panes in the ceiling, but it didn't look like it was in danger of smashing out or anything. The lights were dimmer in there, since she hadn't flipped them on, and with the snow cover, it was almost dark. At the very least, it was heavily shadowed. Shadowed, and nifty. She even smiled a faint bit.

Not many people would enjoy spending their Saturday alternating between being elbow deep in a car's engine and straining beneath it, but in that regard (among others) Nic wasn't most people. She was making real progress on Caleb's car, Ash had everything they would need to do the repair work, and if they were lucky? Almost all of it would be done this weekend.

The night before with Caleb had helped, or so Nic had thought. Whether it had or not, she was nervous, wondering if she was going to soak the tape on her hands with sweat or choke on her mouthguard. It was the day, testing day, and she wasn't far from the proverbial chopping block. The studio was packed with more people than classes ever saw; mostly students, but also friends and family, not to mention friends of the instructors and former students who were just curious about the newest crop.

What had been a good, school-free day had crashed when Nic had met and nearly assaulted Joshua, never even learning the guy's name before she'd chosen prudently and driven away in Caleb's car. Luckily for her, the encounter had been early enough that eventually Nic had been able to sort through the proverbial wreckage and piece some semblance of a better mood together.

The lady who was his 'boss' in the student work program had let Joshua off early, looking rather exhausted and saying she'd give him credit for a full shift. She just seemed like she wanted to go home, which was fine by him. He'd thought for a minute about calling Sean to be picked up, but he was feeling kind of restless. Like he didn't want to really be home. Instead he bundled himself back up -- hat and scarf and gloves, even, like a good boy -- and headed out for a walk. It was kind of an aimless wander, but it felt pretty good to be outside, despite the gusting winds. At least the sidewalks were well-salted and everything.
Eventually his face was starting to go painfully numb instead of just numb, and he turned himself in the direction of the library. He hitched his backpack up on his shoulders a bit and idly thought about some homework he had to do. Maybe he could focus better not at home.

"Nicole?" came the soft call, accompanied by a light push against her door. She wasn't asleep yet, but Nic rarely was before two or three in the morning. So maybe she'd overstated the severity of the car she was bringing to Ash; it still ran after all. Nic didn't mind, she figured that with her efforts to tone down her aggression and all, she was entitled to be a little over the top in exchange. Swinging Caleb's car around a bend and off of 4th Street, her eyes fixed on the sign ahead advertising Ash's shop. Really, she'd lucked out with the job. How many people had a boss so cool that they could just call and demand this sort of thing? Did she, even? He hadn't called back to say no, which Nic was counting as a plus.
Slowing down and cranking the wheel, Nic grit her teeth as the car lurched a little going up the driveway's incline and into the garage. "Fucking shocks," she muttered, cutting the engine and preemptively popping the hood latch. This was going to take a while, likely her entire weekend, but on the same note? She liked hanging out with Ash, she didn't feel like she was screwing up around him like she did with Caleb, and there was never a bad time to learn more tricks of the mechanic's trade. "Gonna miss my paychecks for a few weeks, though," she muttered to herself, firing a cigarette to life and hopping out.

Jesse couldn't remember the dude's name, but he knew that he'd given him hell the year before last in school. He'd been a sophomore, and Crazy Shithead Dude had been a senior. Apparently college hadn't worked out, so he'd taken the first opportunity to turn insane. Jesse hadn't seen him coming as he trudged his way to school through the snow, headphones firmly in place. He would've gotten a ride, but his mom had a treatment that morning, so he volunteered to walk. It was easy for him to block everything out. But Dude certainly had his attention when his 'phones had been snatched off of his head. In the few moments since then, there'd been nonsensical shouted words about the end of the world and the ghosts being one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse or some shit. It was hard to listen when you were pinned up against the side of a building.
"You really need to brush your teeth more, man," Jesse said as the crazy bastard got in all close again. He had his eyes squeezed shut, his glasses had gotten knocked off at some point, and he could only hope that neither of them had stepped on them.

who: lauren and nic
where: park cemetery
when: mid-afternoon
Lauren was sitting on one of the benches just inside Park Cemetery, by one of the quaint little ponds. There weren't ducks anymore, but then, it was a bit snowy for that. The snow 'beneath' her was undisturbed, of course, and she was wishing there were ducks. She liked the ducks. She liked animals in general, though most of the time they could sense her, and kinda went high tailing it the other way. It wasn't like she was going to do anything to them. And, hearing another shriek, she looked up, and saw some little old lady fleeing in the opposite direction. Sighing heavily, she sulked, propping her chin on her good hand's heel, looking sullenly at the ground. That whole screaming thing could quit any time now. Seriously.
To Nic, few things were as funny as little old ladies fleeing in terror. There was something about the wrinkly shuffle that made her smile the same way children tantruming in public did. Technically, she was shortcutting through the cemetary, though Nic didn't have a real destination in mind. There was no kickboxing class today, Ash didn't need her at the shop, and her mom had given her the afternoon to actually go out and do something. Eventually, she'd be trying to track down the white magic shop Nate had mentioned a while back, but for now? She was just walking. "At least she didn't try exorcising you!" Nic called over at the indistinct outline of Lauren, by now secure in the idea that spirits couldn't harm her. She was too far away to recognize the ghost, and was just doing her usual wry sarcasm bit.

When Caleb got home from school that day, (thinking he was more paranoid than usual, with the weird bullshit happening, where he kept thinking he saw something then it just wasn't there) he was half planning on going to crash for a while before heading over to Nic's. He hadn't seen her in school, which he didn't find terribly surprising or anything, though it was a bit disappointing. That disappointment was quashed, however, when he got into his room. Because his bed? Was occupied. With a Nic.
