Who: Doc and Pandect
Where: Streets around town
When: midday

As a professional hazard, Doc was used to surprises. As a man who had seen and done the impossible more times than he could easily count, he expected surprises as much as any man could without trying to anticipate them. And while he'd gotten good at rolling with the punches, so to speak, there were still plenty of times when he was genuinely caught unawares by his life and the world around him. But he hadn't expected it to happen with music.

Pandect was displeased. The new roof had held, which was excellent because he wasn't sure what he'd do if it hadn't. Something drastic probably. But he had spent half his morning pulling fuses and trying to sort through wires with a flashlight in his teeth. He had spent the other half trying to get the phone to stop ringing. He had discovered the front desk phone had a really annoying ringer when he was busy trying to stop electrical fires.

Nice to hear from you again.

Pandect was sitting at the front desk of the Lamplighter, he didn't want to say that's where he belonged. That seemed rather foolhardy. But as much as Marquette got his hackles up, he felt like there was a niche for him there, if only temporarily.

Every once in a while he'd play a quick game of solitaire on the computer, didn't see much other use in the machine, other than for getting mysterious emails. Speaking of which, he opened up the email account and to his surprise the was a new email in the inbox.

Hello. How are you today?

Pandect took a moment to stare at the computer, the message had a sort of odd quality to it, and of course Pandect was resolutely suspicious. But then there was his patented curiosity, it had become strong now that he felt safe, here in Marquette, against his better judgment. He didn't really know that much about computers anyway, just the basics, like how to open Solitaire.

When: Evening (also 1982)

There was, as always, a job to do. Very rarely was there ever not one, in fact, but that was the way life went when you were part of a war pack. Doc and his partners were always on the move, always correlating data and news reports to glean where the next bout of trouble was going to hit. Sometimes it was the Enemy, the people whose names they didn't even use, but just as often it was any number of other supernatural presences out there. Really, someone was always overstepping their bounds.

Pandect had no time for rude people, they were too snappy and had a tendency to be unkind, and seeing as Pandect didn't believe in hypocrisy he avoided being rude as much as possible. It was hard when he was irritated, and he always got irritated when he got into a fight, so he was acting with an even more deliberate carefulness than usual. Slumping a little, keeping his head down, keeping out of notice of people. It was easier to be polite with less interaction with people.

Even though it still wasn't a very good idea to stay outside, Reiz did anyway. After what had happened that afternoon--he didn't feel very comfortable around people. Even though he'd managed to push back the urges and instincts for those few moments, he'd still had a lust for blood that he needed to work out.

He'd stayed outside all day, hiding behind tree trunks, and when night finally came, he... He shifted back to his original form.

"You've prepped me twelve times, I know how to check people in, I know how to check people out, I'm not going to let the motel burn down, not after I put all that work into it."

"Okay, okay!" Amy said, playing with the end of her best sparkly scarf. "I'm just all excited! I haven't had a date in forever."

Locks and Good Men

Who: Pandect and Kurt
When: midday
Where: home improvement store

Kurt had swung by the house that Doc had offered up to him, to see what was what. The first thing he determined was that the place needed a couple more deadbolts. And the fridge was empty, but it was wiser to buy hardware before perishables. It was also possible that the house was fine, and he just needed to be out doing something. Either way, he was out doing something. Shopping at the home improvement store for tools and other things he probably didn't strictly need. Having a car seemed to have made him rather restless. He pushed the cart in front of him down a wide aisle, eyeing the locks with a critical gaze.

Pandect was contemplating shot guns and golf clubs, but Amy had insisted on more peaceable solutions, so he was in the same store he found the shingles at (and they were good shingles) so he figured why not trust them for locks as well. He was testing the window locks, Amy's vandal's favorite way of gaining entrance (which was frankly annoying, it would be a whole lot less hassle for whoever it was to just break the lock on the door, which reminded him, he needed to get another lock for Amy's door) for a second he had thought it was Rey (and it really, really had better not be or he was going to knock out two Delacourts with one stone or die trying) but the demon would taunt Pandect afterward. Let him know he had Pandect's number. And to confront the demon would only reveal his weak spot.

Pandect was an angel of his word, if he said he'd meet the demon Reiz for breakfast, he would meet the demon Reiz for breakfast. And he hadn't lied the night before, he was proud of the demon, he couldn't imagine controlling his natural urges like that, but that pride was mixed up with other emotions. The faint urge to kill, the overpowering need for details, history, facts even though he knew there was no way for him to enact karmic retribution on a demon. Curiosity.

He used to write a lot outside, Smith said it wasn't good to be cooped inside all day. There was a big world out there, and sleeping in a bed wouldn't let you see it. "At least your mouse is fine."

The sky was turning grey again as Arafel pulled into the lot. It was still early, and for whatever reason this seemed like a good place to stop for a while (maybe because I don't intend to drive straight into the lake, he thought acidly: he'd been driving east). He might as well get himself a room now so he could crash for a few hours before whatever the meal customarily called dinner ended up being for him.

He had barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Mr. Andrew.

When: afternoon

Despite the cold, Rafe had gone out wandering again. He took his sketchbook along, hoping in a very vague way that some fresh air would do him some good. Get his mind off of the bottle of perfume he'd found in his bathroom that morning. The perfume that smelled exactly like Chelo. He actually remembered to put a coat on, which was something relatively new. As he started to walk the town, he'd frowned a bit at what looked like creatures of various shapes and sizes that were made of snow. As he went into the park, he found more of them, some with people still working on them. He'd found a place to sit and watch, opening his sketchbook to a fresh page and starting to draw them. In a twisted, different way than they were being made.

When some people had started to build one near his bench, he'd watched avidly. It was a young father and a couple of his children. They started to build the same old shit, however, that bulbous sort of man-figure that Rafe had seen a couple hundred times already. All it had taken was the right sort of criticism, and there was a shouting match. Already edgy, Rafe had pushed the guy, and the next thing he knew, his nose had exploded in pain and he was looking up at the sky. He heard the crunching of boots hurrying away through the snow, and then everything fuzzed into gray.

Who: Pandect and Kurt
When: afternoon
Where: streets of Marquette

Kurt had made up his mind, over night, on the car that he wanted to purchase. He and Doc had spotted it on their driving around town the day before, and with the weather it was, he most certainly needed it. Kurt had slept on it -- though not very long and not very well -- and had decided to buy it before someone else did. Doc had talked about modifications, but for now? He just desperately needed his own transportation. He'd caught a cab into town, and was walking from the bank to the place the vehicle was. He would likely have questions about how to get the thing registered and street-legal, but for the moment just to handle the money was enough, he thought.

He was taking his time about it, as the cold weather wasn't doing his still-healing knee any favors. But the day was clear, he didn't mind the cold even if his leg did, and it was nice to be out and walking.
