Fourth entry: Marquette is a strange town....

I'm starting to think I may have to stay in Marquette longer than it might take to find out what was going on with the cats-- and who knows how long that is going to take, anyway, because that is getting weirder by the night. But everything else about Marquette is unusual, it seems like.

I must hold it together. Must must must.
There are other sakes than mine to consider.

A Strange Day

default user pic

I'm not sure where to even begin with this one. I didn't get to have dinner with dad, like I hoped, but I did meet Caleb. A kid in the ICU who apparently tried to kill himself, though I didn't have the guts to ask how. Or why. And really, would someone who did that really want to talk about it?

Big City Wonderings

Dear Chance,

I'm in San Francisco! No clue how long this took to get to you, but I said I'd write, so I did. The city is amazing! Huge, but absolutely fabulous! There's people everywhere, so much to see, and so much to do. I hardly want to sleep. Yet, I would have liked to have a friend with me. In a city this big, no one really notices you. Sometimes I don't want to be noticed, and that's fine with me, but it's not nearly as fun to play tricks when there's no one there to laugh with you!

Alternative Methods Of Ending Fights

kaysen hmmheadtilt

Who: Chance and Kaysen
When: Afternoonish
Where: Sugarloaf Mountain

It was a strange feeling, taking Kaysen out somewhere that was his house. And didn't include a movie. She'd suggested Sugarloaf, which he had been more than fine with, given he hadn't been around that area in nearly a year. But it also meant that they didn't have an hour and a half of silence while watching a flick in one of their respective homes. It meant more talking. Which meant the possibility of awkwardness, or Chance sticking his foot in his mouth for the thousandth time. And he couldn't help but wonder if this was more like a date. The thought itched along the back of his mind. It probably wasn't a date. In fact, he was pretty sure they were still sort of hedging the friend zone, so to make that leap so quickly into something more was impossible. At least with Kaysen. In fact, he wasn't sure they would ever be more than friends, but that was just his pessimism talking, overpowering and overwhelming his patience at the moment. He'd bite it back eventually because even though it had only been a short while since they had begun to hang out, he felt like he was making progress with her. Little by little. He wasn't about to give that up now.

Chance pulled up alongside her house, and clenched his fingers around the steering wheel while taking a deep breath. He didn't want to think about anything else today. He just wanted to have fun and pretend to be normal for awhile. Although, that was becoming increasingly difficult, especially given Kaysen's own fiery issues. She was just about as normal as he was right now.

Keeping Silent - Phone Message for Ashbelle Harkin

default user pic

Who: Isaac & Ashbelle
When: mid-morning
Where: Voicemail, then the Harkin's House

Voice message to Ashbelle's personal cell phone voicemail ('cause he's just that special):

"Hi, uh ... this is Isaac. Um ... look, I know you're really busy and if you totally want to ignore this or something, that's okay, but ... I really ... need somebody to talk to. About some things. Ahh ... could you call me back maybe? Whenever you can, I know you're busy. I already said that. Okay. Um, thanks. ... oh, and don't tell Thom. Please. For right now. 'Kay. Bye."

Subject: Couldn't sleep

You'll get this in the morning, but I couldn't sleep. Wanted to ring you, but I don't want to wake you. yeah, I should have rung at a more reasonable time, right? Like, say last night? Or something. Sorry - I just...

I think I've lost a best friend. I fucked up, badly. Said something I should have just kept my big mouth shut about and now he thinks I'm batshit insane.

I don't know what to do. I told Isaac about the 'other' stuff in the world. He didn't know any of it existed. And I don't think I did a very good job of telling. Screw that, I KNOW I did a terrible job of explaining everything and I think I killed his head. I should have just left it, but he needed to know. You know his sister fell into the fire at the party? Turns out that she didn't get hurt. At all. So I was looking into it because that sort of thing isn't kosher and I think she's a fire elemental. And if she is, then I didn't feel right keeping that from my best friend and her brother. Anyway, so we got into that and then I realised that he really didn't know. Anything. Except by then I was in the middle of everything and - you know they talk about digging yourself deeper and deeper into a hole? Yeah, it was that kind of thing and now I don't know what to do and it's the middle of the night and I'm rambling at you.

You know, I don't ramble. Ever.

I've missed you - how've you been?

TIME UPDATE

default user pic

Date: Friday, August 17th 2007

Weather: It's a dry day today, hot towards noon and unbearable towards evening.

Events: Tonight, there's a live band playing at Babylon, and it's the first day of an annual festival down at Lower Harbor Park--Seafood Fest. This means the whole park is decked out with tents from local restaurants, live bands play, fireworks are set off at dusk, and it's cheap, good food and friendlyness for all. This year, it's even cheaper than usual, as a thank you to all of the towns residents who helped with the cat-cleanup.

For our psychics...the dreams return only tonight it's different.

The Dream: As the dream begins, the first thing to notice is the sounds surrounding you. Forest sounds, small, unseen things in the tall grass and the underbrush, birds singing over head. The sun is shining brightly, so brightly that the blue of the sky is lost in the glare if one looks up. Trees help blot out the sky, after walking along a dirt road that's being reclaimed by the woods.

Temperature is hazy, and a chill only sets in the farther from the sounds of the town now far behind have faded entirely. There are a few vague ruins barely seen at the edges of your vision...houses? A rusted out car from decades before? A child's bike, the tires rotted off up ahead, half on the path. Things start to move more quickly then, blurring everything as the dreamer speeds through the rest of the walk, over past where the road has been completely reclaimed, over uneven ground where cave ins deep beneath the surface once occurred, but nature's smoothed the area some, vegitation growing over the jagged edges of rock that jut up from the earth. The valley it creates leads into the darker forest, and the speeding gets even faster. There's barely time to see anything as the trees speed on either side of the dreamer, only vague impressions of other ruins, trees and animals (creatures?) watching the progress. The chill gets worse, starting to change from merely noted to icy.

The forest barely glimpsed changes with the temperature, going from lush and green, thick with life to black and skeletal, harsh with jagged branches clawing at any who venture near. There's a black rock wall up ahead, with an opening that dives down down down into even more coldness. It's almost impossible to see, the black of the cave nearly blending with the black of the rock. Then there's nothing left but blackness, and an abrupt stop.

All characters who experience the dream will wake with a feeling that they need to go somewhere. They won't be able to pinpoint it on the map, but if they follow the feeling, it will lead them along the same road as the dream, out of Marquette along the I41, leaving the road this side of Negaunee and leading them up into the middle of nowhere (about 7 miles from Marquette) until they reach the same fencing etc. If they get over or through the first fence, there's a second fence about 1/4 mile further on and if they get through that there's the wide open expanse of ground.

This time, the feeling doesn't die until about another half a mile up the 'path', where a few ruins are able to be seen.

If you have any events or anything going on which you think warrants a mention in the time update, please let us know!
