Guy Talk + Ghost Talk = WTF?
Who: Gabe and Kyle
Where: MSHS, lockers then parking lot
When: Lunchtime
Having semi-resolved his issues with Kavin, Gabe's day only continued to get better. He knew that it would come crashing down later, but for now he'd pretend there wasn't a funeral coming up later that afternoon. For now, he'd get to brag about his first set of real wheels that didn't belong on a bicycle. Dumping his books and grabbing his lunch, he headed over to Kyle's locker, looking to catch up with his friend for the first time in a long while. He wasn't sure how it happened, but they'd not been connecting, probably due to the fact that Gabe's life had become a circus over the past week. Unfortunately, Kyle didn't have any idea how true this was, and Gabe didn't think he could tell him. Out of all his friends, Kyle was least likely to believe the weirdness that had infiltrated his life.
Kyle saw Gabe coming as he put his morning books away and grabbed his afternoon homework. He didn't have tutoring that day, which was awesome since he wanted to see Gabe's new set of wheels. He was still waiting on Kavin to call or text him about the supposed ghosts, but so far, nothing. Which wasn't surprising. "Hey man," Kyle greeted. "Long time no talk... or see... or whatever the fuck. You've been a busy mother fucker." Kyle shut his locker and slung his bag over his shoulder before grinning. "I heard something about you finally getting your own set of wheels."
"Yeah, well, I saw you at Charlotte's party, but I wasn't sure I could disconnect you from your girl long enough to get a word in," Gabe teased. If he'd been in Kyle's place, he'd have been distracted the whole night as well. Claire didn't go for dresses though, and she didn't go for Gabe, which meant no oggling little tiny skirts or making out in corners. "You getting laid, dude? Cause damn! She looked ready for action," he grinned. "No time to take a joy ride over lunch, but we can sit inside and warm up. Wanna go see her?"
Kyle scowled briefly at the mention of Alexis, but let his expression smooth out into nonchalance. He hadn't heard from Alexis since her last text, and he hadn't seen her in school yet. "Nah, she's not going to give it up to anyone anytime soon, let alone me." Since he didn't believe in ghosts, apparently he was blind or something. He smiled again, pushing past that thought. "Yeah, let's go see her... might as well let you brag for a bit, right?"
"Seriously?" Gabe asked, brow raising. "You gotta be getting more action than me, at least," he added with a snort. He suspected it would help to actually ask girls out, but he'd rather spend time with Claire... which he realized was preventing him from meeting a girl that really liked him, but it was hard to show interest when it was already directed elsewhere. "Come on," Gabe said, leading the way out to the parking lot. "You can fill me in on what you've been up to lately."
"Well, probably more than you, yeah," Kyle joked easily, falling into step beside him. "Don't really know what to tell you. I haven't been up to all that much. School shit, and dealing with... well, whatever it is everyone is talking about. Ghosts or something? I don't know. It all sounds pretty damn ridiculous to me. I told Alexis I thought it was a hoax or something and I think she's pissed at me now. So I don't know know what's going on there." He shrugged and glanced at Gabe. "What about you?"
"You haven't seen them?" Gabe asked, looking at Kyle as if he was crazy, instead of the other way around. He thought everyone had at this point. For the first time since things started to unravel around him, he felt like everyone was on the same page with the weird. "My mom can barely get any work done, there's so many hanging around the morgue and the cemetery. And I almost hit one on the way to school today-- which I totally blame on that text you sent me. You trying to jinx me or something?"
Releasing a growl of frustration, Kyle shot Gabe a look that said 'not you too!'. "Come on man! Jesus..." He lifted his arms up and held them wide. "Show me one. They're all over the place, right? Where? Kavin said he'd text me when he encountered some so I could come and see for myself, but there's been nothing. And you can't hit ghosts, they're ghosts." He was trying really hard not to get agitated. It wasn't so much at Gabe, but the whole situation. "You, Alexis, Kavin... you're all telling me one thing but I'm seeing something totally.... totally diff... different. So what am I suppose to think?"
"Don't tell me I can't hit one, then tell me they're not real," Gabe laughed, trying to keep the mood light. He didn't have an answer for Kyle. Looking around right now, he didn't see any ghosts. "I don't know," he shrugged. "Maybe you're lucky and just haven't come across one yet. It's not like you're missing out on much. They're just freaky looking dead people, but not, like, zombies. But I know I've seen 'em and I haven't been smoking up without you, so I've got no explanation except to believe my eyes."
"I was kidding," Kyle shot back, but with a grin. "And I don't think I'm lucky... I just think I'm not... I don't know. I don't want to say insane, because I don't think you guys are, I just... I can't see it with my own eyes. I haven't yet. So I can't really believe in it. You tell me vampires are real? I wanna see one. Aliens? Cool, let me know when they land so I can come check it out. Ghosts? Okay, great... where? I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary and suddenly I'm the freak or something."
"So none of those shadow creatures climbed out of a mirror and attacked you?" Gabe asked, surprised now that Kyle hadn't encountered anything. "It was about a month ago. It was the whole reason that psycho chick pulled out a gun. We were getting attacked and-- Dude, if you're some kind of ghost repellent, I've gotta hang out with you more often." He didn't actually believe that because it didn't make sense. Kyle would have to work some kind of a spell to get that kind of power, at least that's what he thought.
"What?" Shadow creatures climbing out of mirrors? Okay, Gabe was either high, or fucking with Kyle's mind. Both were possibilities. "Shadow...? No, man. I saw no shit coming out of my mirrors to attack me. What the fuck?" Ghost repellent... yeah, somehow he doubted that. "I don't know what to tell you, dude. I saw nothing. I've seen nothing. Nothing's happened to me that was out of the.... ord..." What the fuck was that word? Kyle drew his brows together in frustration before it managed to get to his mouth. "...ordinary. It's kind of creeping me out, since I'm starting to think everyone's out to play a joke on me."
Gabe took that as a very solid no. Which again, was weird considering it all. He'd been able to write off the shadow things if nothing else had happened since then. But things had continued to happen, over and over again, and he could only ignore so much. There was also that little bit where he'd joined the ranks of the supernatural. That pretty much made it impossible. "I don't know what to say," Gabe sighed, "but I swear on my life I'm not lying to you, man. Something's just fucked up." And he really didn't have a clue what to do about it. Which was fine, since they had a car to inspect. "There she is," Gabe grinned as they walked up to his semi-new Mustang. "What do you think?"
Kyle said nothing in response to things being fucked up. They were, but he wasn't sure as to what capacity yet. He was still thinking that people were messing with him. Or they were sucked into this nationwide paranoia. Someone's been drinking the Kool-Aid and all that shit. Kyle shrugged it off and studied Gabe's car instead. "'94 Mustang... nice." He began to walk around the car, checking out every bit he could see. "How does she run? Have you taken her out to the backroads yet?"
"Not yet. I just got her last night. Took her around the block, but I haven't gotten a chance to really put her to the test. Smooth ride so far, though," Gabe grinned, clearly pleased with the car. Even if it wasn't brand new, it was something to brag about, for sure. "Let me know if you're ever up for cruising," he said, leaving the invitation open. He'd not known Kyle to be up for anything of the sort recently, but it seemed normal to offer, just in case.
"Yeah, sounds good," Kyle agreed with a grin. He doubted he'd be taking Gabe up on the offer anytime soon. Driving around in a minivan was hard enough, getting into a Mustang with Gabe? He would probably have a panic attack. "Pretty impressive. Don't fuck her up! Shit... now who am I going to walk to hockey practice with? You're gonna fly right by me every damn afternoon."
"You know I'd give you a ride," Gabe pointed out, even though he didn't expect Kyle to take it. "Not like I'm gonna be playing any time soon. I've gotta let my shoulder heal, then get the go ahead from my doctor." Which sucked, cause he'd give just about anything to be back in the game. He was still a concerned about the risk, though, so maybe it was good that he was out for a while. That was one of those things he wasn't sure about, but it wasn't like the books could come out and tell him what would force a change in every instance.
"Hopefully you won't be gone too long... team's missing something without you." Kyle smoothed his hand over the hood of Gabe's car. He had a car himself. His parents had given him one, although Kyle had yet to drive it. He hoped he'd get over his fear of being inside of a car soon, so he could enjoy it. "You still going to come watch us play though? Be part of the team?"
"Dude, I'm so there," Gabe grinned. "Whatever coach will let me do, I'm in for. All I can't do is swing the damn stick." At least, that's what he knew of for now. He'd figure out the rest once he'd healed enough to find out. "Which reminds me-- you got any of those slime balloons the guys are carrying around? I want in on the fun," he smirked. He might not be any good at throwing, but he wasn't going to miss out on team mischief.
"You can be our official cheerleader," Kyle joked before pulling his bag around to his front to unzip it. He pulled out one of the balloons he had placed between his t-shirts inside. Thankfully it hadn't busted. "Here. I didn't dress up like the other idiots, but I definitely got a couple of these."
"Long as you don't expect me in a skirt," Gabe grinned, taking the balloon from Kyle. This? was excellent. A little fun was just what he needed to offset the funeral later that afternoon. Life was getting far too serious, in his opinion, and if slime-filled balloons were required to spice things up a bit, then he was all game.
