A Job at Mya's
Who: Olivia & Mya
When: 3:00pm
Where: Mya's Diner
The diner wasn't as crowded when Olivia returned at three. She wasn't overly anxious or nervous, as she'd had several interviews in the past few years. If this one didn't pan out, there was always another possibility elsewhere, though Olivia did hope this one would work out.
She gripped her shoulder bag, less full now of her stuff, as much of it was still dumped on her motel bed. She spotted Mya at the counter and walked over, mentally preparing herself for the questions that would soon be following.
Mya smiled and nodded politely to the girl. "Olivia right?" She asked, making sure she remembered the name on the application. Mya signaled to her staffer behind the counter that she'd be away and gestured to Olivia. "Come on, let's go to my office." She said.
There were two chairs in front of the desk and Mya motioned for Olivia to take one. She herself got a pencil and small pad of paper before taking the other, sitting face to face with the girl. "I'm glad you came back, so shall we get started?"
Olivia set her bag on the floor at her feet and clasped her hands in her lap. Usually the boss preferred to sit behind the desk, facing her, which Olivia could only guess was a way to ensure their position of power over the lowly employee.
Mya, however, surprised Olivia by sitting directly across from her. Oddly, it made Olivia like her a bit more.
"I'm glad I came back too," she replied with a small smile. "I'm ready if you are."
Mya nodded and brushed a bit of hair behind her ear as she spoke. "So, I don't have many questions, my first is: why would you like to work -here-?" She asked.
Those who had heard her interview more than once knew that she had a very non-spontaneous way of interviewing, she only needed to know a couple things, and rarely had follow-up questions.
The possibility of free coffee? Olivia thought, biting her lip against a smile.
"Well, I have waiting experience," Olivia began after a moment. "I like meeting and working with new people, and I like keeping busy, which judging by the rush this morning, shouldn't be a problem. And this place has an atmosphere that I quite like." It was a routine question, with routine answers.
Mya nodded making a couple notes. Her answers were expected, she'd clearly done this before. "Ok then, good answer." She said with a grin. Looking up she took a moment to judge the slight glimmer coming off the girl, not as strong as most of her employees, but there -was- something there. "Before I make my decision is there anything -you'd- like let me know, or say?" Mya asked.
Olivia lifted an eyebrow at the question. Decision already? That was it? She was liking Mya more and more.
"Just that I'll try my hardest not to disappoint you," Olivia stated truthfully. She stunk at steady employment which is why she could never keep a grip on it. But for some reason, at least for now, she wanted try. "And I promise to keep broken dishes to a minimum."
Mya made a few more notes and got up from her seat. "Ok then..." She said making a note on her calender. "It says you're available to work any time." She confirmed, checking the application to make sure. "Which is good. Do you have anywhere you need to be right now?" She asked.
"I don't," Olivia said, standing from her chair. The last thing she wanted was to be cooped up in that motel room. "I can stick around if you want me too."
"Good then." Mya said sitting in the chair behind her desk and digging into a drawer. After fiddling with something for a moment she pulled out a blank name tag and small slip of label paper with 'Olivia' on it. She put it on the name tag and passed it to it's namesake. She then dug out a file of papers and handed it to the girl. "I'll need these filled out the next time you come in, but right now how about a tour?"
Olivia smiled widely, taking the badge and papers. Relief flooded her immediately. "I'd love a tour," she said, slipping the papers into her bag to fill out later. "I really appreciate this."
Mya shook her head. "It's nothing dear." She said getting up and moving to the door. "You can leave your bag, it'll be safe in here." She said, exiting and starting the tour. It was pretty routine. She showed her behind the counter, the kitchen, the dishes area and the registers. She explained a little about each part and showed her where she could put her stuff on her first day. While in the back room Mya got into one of the storage cabinets and pulled Olivia out an apron and an order book. "I'm sure the other places you've worked were a bit more 'hi-tech' in their systems, I like to keep things simple, and a little old fashion." She said in regards to the manual register/order system.
"I'm a quick learner," Olivia assured her. It was one of the reasons she'd had a 4.0 GPA at one point in her life. Damn, that was a long time ago. From dreams of medical school to aprons. Life was...strange. She followed Mya around the diner, taking in the equipment, listening intently to every word she said. "When can I start?" Olivia asked finally, eager to start making money.
Mya lead her back into her office. "I'm sure you are. How about you start Monday morning? We can walk you through a day, show you set up and stuff for breakfast and lunch. You can work with a server and shadow them for a while, learn the register and stuff. And if all goes well get a table or two of your own by lunch rush."
"Monday is perfect. I'll be here," Olivia told her before picking up her bag and offering her hand to Mya. "Thanks again, Mya." She had a job, which meant she would soon have money which meant relief.
