Seeing is Believing
Who: Alexis and Kyle
Where: MSHS, Chemistry Class
When: Afternoon
When Alexis got to chemistry, she still hadn't decided what to say to Kyle, though she thought she might owe him an apology for being snippy. She didn't know how to handle the fact that he hadn't seen any ghosts at this point, seeing as she had one practically stalking her when she was at home. The ghost boy had followed her from room to room, peering in from the outside, till she finally decided to try and get some sleep. If the curtains were closed, then she couldn't see him, but that didn't help her sleep, constantly worrying he might wander inside. She was exhausted and spent most of the day thinking about where she could go to nap that wasn't at home.
Kyle walked into class soon after Alexis had and he hesitated in the doorway before finally walking to their table to sit down. He hadn't talked to her since their texting and was pretty sure she was still irritated with him. Which was fine, since he was a bit irritated with her too. He sat down and set his book bag on the table before opening it to dig around for his homework which he'd actually gotten finished. He was just stubborn enough to figure that if she wanted to talk to him, she would. If not, he could do the silent treatment just fine.
Alexis looked up as Kyle came in and took the seat beside her, staring at her book as he got himself settled. She wasn't the sort to completely ignore him, not over something like this, but she honestly didn't know what to say. For the first time ever, there was reason for people to believe her, and yet he still didn't. It was hard for her not to take that personally. "You really haven't seen any ghosts?" she asked quietly, looking over at him. It was so much easier to read a person in person than over text message.
He released a small sigh and set his book down on the table. He wasn't getting tired of talking about ghosts. Looking over at her, Kyle met her eyes with his. "I haven't seen any ghosts. None." He didn't know what else to tell her. He wasn't going to lie and say yes, he'd seen ghosts all over town just to make her happy. "If I had seen any, I'd have no reason to lie to you, Alexis."
She hadn't thought he'd been lying to her... she just didn't see how he could be telling the truth. She realized the two thoughts contradicted each other, but she saw no reasonable explanation why Kyle would've missed what was happening all around him. "I was scared," she said, meeting his gaze. "But I wasn't lying either." That was what bothered her the most, was that he seemed to think this was all in her head. If that was the case, she probably needed to be committed.
"I don't know what to tell you, Alexis." Kyle was feeling frustrated again, though it wasn't directed toward her. "If people are seeing this stuff, then... okay. I'm not. You can't expect me to believe in something I can't see with my own two eyes. I don't know what's going on, or what explanations there are... I'm sure there's one somewhere. But I don't see them." He ran a hand over his short hair before frowning. "I walked to school. I went out to the parking lot at lunch with Gabe. I didn't see anything then, and neither did he."
She didn't know what to make of that. She really had no idea how he'd not run into anything at all, since she seemed to be seeing them everywhere. Telling him about what she'd been seeing didn't seem like a great idea when it would only make him think she was one of the crazy ones... or whatever it was he thought of the people who saw ghosts. "I believe you," she said, deciding not to argue. She was exhausted and all she really wanted at the moment was a nap. "I don't have an explanation. I just know what I saw. And I don't think I'm crazy."
"And I don't think I'm crazy," Kyle countered before flipping open his textbook. "Or blind," he added, just because he was still mildly irked at her text before. If he thought Alexis was crazy, then he'd have to think Gabe and Kavin were crazy too. Maybe when Kavin called him, he'd figure this stuff out. If Kavin took him to where these "ghosts" were, and he saw them, that's one thing. But if he got there and there was nothing? Then he would know something fucked up was going on.
"Well, I'm not just freaking out either," Alexis argued. That was what got her, that he thought this was all in her head, brought on by media attention or something of the sort. Instead, it was really there and she'd been dealing with a ghost all night, not just a figment of her imagination. "I know what I saw," she said softly, opening her book as well. She didn't want to fight, not when she was this tired, but she wasn't going to admit she was crazy either. If she was, then so was a good portion of the world.
"Okay." He was trying not to let his agitation show, but he could feel a headache coming on, and that was the last thing he needed. "I don't know what you want me to say, Alexis. You saw what you saw, and that's fine. I just can't... say that it's true, or that I believe you when I'm hearing that they're everywhere except where I am, apparently. That's all it is. Kavin and Gabe said they saw these things too, but yet I haven't. So I don't know what to think. That's all."
Alexis gave a little nod and put her head down on the desk. She was pretty good in Chemistry class, so maybe their teacher would let her rest a bit. She didn't know what to say to Kyle, since he was implying he didn't believe her, and if that was the case, then she might as well be going crazy. She knew this was real, though, even if she didn't know how to make him see it.
