Settling In
Who: Dean and Taylor
Where: The breakwater
When: Mid-afternoon
After finally getting some more sleep Dean had decided that he needed to get a feel for where he'd be living from now on. Oz had been right - Sophie hadn't minded giving him a lift into town at all and she'd dropped him off, saying that she'd pick him up at six and talking about getting him a cell phone. he'd cringed at that - not at the phone thing, but how Americanised his cousin had got over the past few years. It was just, well, weird. And something he guessed that he'd have to get used to.
He wandered around fairly aimlessly until he hit the lake. Which brought him up short. He'd read up on Marquette. he knew that it was on the shores of lake Superior. And he knew that Superior was gonna be big. But - there was big and then three was Big. This was ocean big. This was... something else. Enough so that it just made him stand and stare.
Taylor was sat a little way up the breakwater, sketch pad braced against her knees working on a drawing. Although she often came the lake shore, she never got tired of it, there was something reassuring about just looking out over the water. The lake was still enough for her to hear someone approaching and she turned to see it was. She raised an eyebrow when she saw an unfamilar guy about her age who, judging by the look on his face as he stared at the lake, was new in town.
Smiling to herself, she flipped over to a clean page in her pad and began sketching him, wanting to capture his expression while it was fresh in her mind.
Dean closed his eyes, listening out over the lake to the sound of the waves crashing against the walls of the breakwall, the birds wheeling overhead, distant voices calling to one another. He breathed deeply and evenly, thinking that this was actually a place he could spend a lot of time. Eventually, he opened his eyes again on the exhale and turned - and promptly caught sight of a girl who appeared to be drawing him. He gave her a confused, uncertain look.
Looking up from her sketch, Taylor met the boy's eyes and seeing the look on his face lowered her pad and gave him a small wave. Hell, she was the one using him as an inpromptu subject, it seemed the least she could do was be polite. Besides, she was in a good mood and wasn't looking to start something with a complete stranger.
Dean didn't look any less uncertain after the wave. In fact, he actually looked back over his shoulder, in case there was someone behind him. Which was stupid, considering the fact that the only thing behind him was a ruddy great lake. He looked back at the girl. "Er... hi," he said, figuring it was either that or walking off, which struck him as being rude. He was just a bit thrown and wasn't sure what to say.
Smiling twitching at his reaction, Taylor closed her sketch pad and resting her chin on her knees, looked at the boy carefully "Hey." she replied, catching hold of some stray hair and tucking it behind her ear. "I'm guessing you're new in town."
Dean raised an eyebrow. "Er - is it that obvious?" he asked her. Of course, his English accent didn't help at all, but she'd guessed that before he'd really said anything, hadn't she?
"The look on your face when you saw the lake gave you away." Taylor explained, as she fiddled with a loose thread on the hem of her jeans. Of course now she'd heard him speak, her suspicion was confirmed. "Once someone's been here a while, they tend to stop being amazed by it." Turning her head, she looked out over the water and let out a small sigh. "You only get to see it for the first time once, make the most of it.."
he looked back at the lake, as if maybe it would have changed. He really didn't think it was going to stop being amazing any time soon. "It looks liike the sea," he told her, looking back at the girl. "I've never seen a lake that big before." he paused. "And yeah, I'm new - arrived last night," he added. He would not yawn, he would not yawn, he would not yawn.
