Slumber Parties Keep Everyone Safe
Who: Lily, Breezy, Alexis, Kyle
When: Evening/night
Where: Lily's house
Lily returned from the hospital depressed. True to her word, she'd tried to tell the attack victims that they were potentially in danger. She'd done as Doc had suggested and kept it vague but urgent. All it had done was gotten her kicked out of several hospital rooms before being escorted out entirely by two security guards. By that time, it was edging towards dusk and she knew she needed to get home.
She made it back safely, confirming with her mother that her friends would be coming over that night. After that, all she needed to do was straighten up her room a little bit - she kept it fairly clean on a regular basis, and she didn't want to give her mom any reason to come in and bitch later that night. She worked quickly, then took her DS Lite and parked herself on the couch. A couple rounds of Ninja Town while she waited for the girls and Kyle to come over might help her stop thinking so hard about the people she'd talked to who would probably die later that night.
Breezy was more than a little frustrated with her twin, who she had been unable to convince of impending doom. She just hoped the idiots would stay safe tonight, and that she'd manage not to text them every twenty minutes. When her brother dropped her off at Lily's house, she tried not to make an idiot out of herself as she hauled ass for the door. Outside was not the place to be.
Lily jumped up to the sound of someone at the door, beating her mom to answering. She pulled it open to admit Breezy, checking behind her in case Kyle and Alexis were close. She didn't see them, but there was still time before dark, so she wasn't worried. Yet. "Hey," she said, closing the door behind Breezy. "Good to see you made it."
Alexis was pleased her father had agreed with the sleepover, since it made far more sense than her staying home alone. She texted Kyle right before she left, since her father was driving her, and the sleepover would be quickly called off if he realized that boys were involved. When they pulled up in front of Lily's house, she gave him and hug and a kiss and wished him good luck. She couldn't think too much on the idea of him not being there to pick her up in the morning. He'd been doing this her whole life. Tonight was no different. Her father drove away as Lily opened the door, and Alexis gave her a small smile. "Thanks for having me over tonight. I texted Kyle and he's on his way."
"No problem," Lily said with a smile in return, stepping back to let her in and check the amount of light left - though not much had changed in the two seconds since Breezy'd arrived. "I'm glad you made it. Does Kyle need a ride? We can take my dad's car and go get him if we have to." Though if they had a couple minutes, it would probably be a good idea to get Breezy and Alexis talking about their shared secret.
"Um, Kyle's riding his bike," Alexis said. "He promised to be here before sunset. It shouldn't take too long." She didn't want to put him in a position where he had to ride in a car, since she knew that was the one thing that would freak him out. Werewolves wouldn't do it, but riding in cars? Definitely. "Is there a plan for sneaking him in?"
Impending werewolf doom or not, Breezy couldn't help but be terribly amused. How could she not be amused with sneaking a boy into the slumber party? She looked over to Lily, not really sure what the plan was herself.
"Yeah," Lily said. "Conveniently, there is a trellis right outside my craft room window. It's half the reason I picked it - if I'd picked it as my bedroom, my mom and dad would've figured it out. But as it's not unusual for me to hole up in there for hours at a time, plus it's right down the hall from my bedroom, so I've always got an escape route if necessary. Especially since they sleep downstairs and on the other side of the house." She grinned. "I win. Let's go upstairs, you guys totally need to talk before Kyle gets here."
Alexis laughed as she imagined Kyle climbing up the trellis and into the house. She couldn't decide if it fit in Romeo and Juliet or some wayward spy movie gone wrong. Perhaps a combination of the two. "Just don't talk about the werewolves around him," she warned the both of them as they climbed up the stairs. "He doesn't believe in them, and I don't think he'll be convinced unless he sees one with his own eyes."
"Ugh." Breezy said, wrinkling her nose up as they headed upstairs. "Bruce doesn't believe me, either. He was a real pain in the ass about it." She realized it was probably a little weird that she didn't question it at all, but... her people were descendants of fairies, for fucks sake. If that existed, werewolves could too. It was just logic, dammit.
"No one at the hospital believe me, either," Lily said, an uncharacteristic frown on her face. "And I didn't even mention werewolves. They booted me out. It sucked so hard." She led the way into her room and flopped down on her bed. "Tell Kyle to text when he gets here, go straight to the left side of the house," she instructed Alexis. "He could probably come in the front door but then we'd have to fake him leaving, and I don't want him out after dark even if it's to run to the side of the house. Better if they don't even know he's here. Anyway," she said, suddenly grinning, "Guys. A belief in werewolves isn't all we three have in common."
"It's kinda hard for most people to swallow," Alexis said, pulling out her cell phone. "I don't really blame them. It's just unfortunate that there's nothing else we can do." She sent a quick text message to Kyle with Lily's instructions, then closed her phone to wait for his response. Lily's comment put her on guard, worried instantly about how Breezy might take it if Lily blurted her secret. Every person was different, and just because Breezy believed in werewolves didn't mean she wouldn't freak at something else.
Breezy dropped her bag on the floor and plunked down next to Lily, raising an eyebrow as she looked back and forth between her friends. What had she missed? "Well I'd hope there's a lot more besides werewolves we have in common, but go on." She couldn't resist the urge to be a smart ass.
"Okay, fine, I'll go first," Lily said, catching the look on Alexis' face and Breezy being smart. "I've been practicing, anyway. Well, since last night." Rolling over so she could get into her bedside table's drawer, she reached in and pulled out a light bulb. Wondering what the consequences would be of doing this in front of her friends, she concentrated, holding the bulb by its metal end. And because she'd just learned this last night, it took a minute, but eventually she managed to light up the bulb - flickeringly so, but at least she'd done it. "Viola," she pronounced with a flourish, though kind of distractedly because she had to keep her attention on it or it'd go out.
"Awesome!" Alexis said, forgetting to be worried in favor of praising Lily's little trick. Nothing she did seemed that useful, though she knew it could be, over time. She just had a lot to learn before it stopped seeming like tiny little magic tricks. "You learned to do that since last night? That's totally better than anything I can do."
Breezy had clapped and cheered for Lily's trick, but something Alexis said caught her attention. "Huh? What can you do? What did I miss?"
"Yeah," Lily told Alexis, "but it needs work. Obviously." She stopped the trick and replaced the bulb, a big, shit-eating grin spreading over her face at Breezy's question. "Well, I said we had more in common than werewolves," she said smugly, grinning. "And love of dance, and killer fashion sense, and good looks, and brains."
The fact that Lily had shared her secret with Breezy made Alexis a bit more comfortable, though she was still wary about talking about it so openly. She'd never told anyone, so two people in one day seemed like a ton. "I can move water," Alexis said, as if it was nothing. Right now, it really did seem like nothing, though that could all change if she worked at it.
Breezy tilted her head to the side as she looked at Alexis, more than a little confused. "Like... bladder control? Huh?" Airhead moment! "Move water how?"
"Dude," Lily said flatly, fighting a smile. "You seriously did not just say that."
"No," Alexis laughed. "Like, I can make little whirlpools, or waves, just by meditating on it. I read somewhere that I can learn to turn water to ice, but I haven't quite gotten that down. Instead it just gets really cold."
"Oh! That totally makes more sense." Breezy replied, eyes lighting up. Well, in her world it did anyway. "That's awesome! I wanna see!"
"Um... I can use the sink," Alexis said, jumping up from her spot to lead them into the bathroom. Plugging the drain, she filled the sink up with just a couple inches of water, then let it sit while Lily and Breezy followed. Once the water was still, she began to concentrate, smiling when the water began to swirl around. It took focus, though, so as soon as she looked up to her friends, it began to fade. "Kind of like that."
"That's awesome!" Breezy exclaimed. She'd never known something like that was actually possible, but she supposed anything was possible. Anything, especially after the past few days. "I don't get how the hell you guys figured out that you could do this kind of stuff."
Lily grinned, watching Alexis demonstrate - she'd seen it in her water bottle at school, but it was still awesome. "Well, like I told you," she said to Breezy, "weird shit just started happening around me. And there was this feeling... it's hard to put into words. But from there it was just experiment. We're not all as lucky as you," she teased, referring to Breezy's talent being familial. Growing up knowing what you could do was way better, in her opinion.
Alexis knew what Lily was trying to say, even if she didn't know the words herself. For her, she'd been able to test out the water every time she took a shower or a bath. It had been little things all along, and with her background, it wasn't impossible to figure out. "What can you do?" she asked Breezy, picking up on the fact there must be something.
"My family and I are dreamweavers." Breezy answered, completely forgetting to dish out her own secret until Alexis prompted her. "I weave dreams on a loom. I brought one with me, for Lily - if I'd known I would have brought one for you!"
"Oh shit, seriously?" Lily asked, squealing in delight. "Oh wait, dude, it's not like a sexy dream or anything, right? 'Cause otherwise I'm gonna have to raincheck, what with you people all staying in my room and shit." She flailed a little bit more, because goddamn. No one had ever made her a dream before, that was insane.
Alexis had heard of dreamweavers, even if she really didn't know what they were. Her father didn't hunt them, which was an added relief, but that also meant she wasn't up on her knowledge when it came to them. "Oh, that rocks! Can you, like, weave anything? And you make it on a loom? Like a blanket?" She hoped they weren't silly questions, but this was totally out of her realm of knowledge.
Breezy giggled and went back into Lily's room, plunking down in front of her bag to look for Lily's dream. "I promise, it's not a sexy dream. It's just a frilly happiness dream." she said, finally pulling out a small glass bottle. Its contents were quite unremarkable - just a stringy, colorless liquid. "And yes, that's basically it. And I don't have to sleep if I weave."
Lily took a flying leap onto her bed from practically across the room, landing with a bounce. "So. Cool." she pronounced, peering at it for a second. "You'll have to tell me how to use it before we go to bed tonight," she said. "Is any of the stuff you took from me in there, or did you just dump that since we were like, in the cafeteria?" She grinned at Alexis, pointing to Breezy. "Dude. She is some kind of wizard. It was super cool."
"You'll have to tell me how you do it," Alexis grinned, following them both back into the bedroom. "I know next to nothing about dreamweavers. Just that you can make dreams, which is probably one of the most awesome talents ever." At least, that was her opinion at the moment. "So you took something from her? Or... one sec," she said, as her cell phone began to beep. "Hey guys, Kyle's here," Alexis bit her lip. "Sorry to spoil the party. I just couldn't let him wander around tonight."
Breezy had been about to show Alexis what dreamstuff was, but it could wait. "I'll show you another time." she promised, winking at the blonde. Before Kyle could come in she tossed the bottled dream in Lily's direction. "Drink it before bed."
"Ooh, call me when you do the demonstrations," Lily said. "That'll be pimp." She caught the bottle and set it carefully on her bedside table. "Got it," she said, saluting Breezy. "And thanks, this is going to be super cool." She shook her head at Alexis. "No way, I invited him over, it's cool. Besides, it's not like we're never going to be able to see each other or have sleepovers ever again. We'll plan a real girl's night when all the trouble dies down and really get into it. Come on," she said, rising and beckoning the other girls. "I've got to go unlock the window for him so he can get in and one of you needs to play lookout in case my mom comes up for whatever."
"You've met Kyle, haven't you?" Alexis asked Breezy as they headed over to the window. She was glad that Lily knew him, since Kyle could be such a guy, and she didn't expect that to change just because he was surrounded by girls. She was also the slightest bit nervous about how they were supposed to behave as a couple, since they weren't technically a couple, but he wanted to share a sleeping bag. Alexis was pretty sure her face might turn permanently red for the night if he wasn't careful with what he said.
"Eh." Breezy said, shrugging vaguely. "I've seen him at hockey games, but not so much 'met'. Small detail." she said, zipping up her bag and standing up. "I'll play lookout, I have good mom radar." To put it mildly.
"He's cool," Lily assured Breezy. "We have sixth period together." She flipped the lock and pushed the window up, sticking her head out to keep an eye out for Kyle so she could direct him if he didn't know which side of the house was the right side. Not that it would be hard, this being the only side of the house with a trellis to climb.
Kyle wasn't really sure why he had agreed to a sleepov... no, no, scratch that - spending the night - at Lily's with Alexis and Breezy. It was a Friday night, and he could have called Gabe to hang out, or Kavin or someone... but even his mom had seemed reluctant to let him out of the house with all of the animal attacks. He had said he was spending the night at Gabe's, which seemed to appease her, and then rode his bike to Lily's after receiving Alexis's text. He figured it was maybe the way Alexis had asked that he couldn't really have said no to her. But he still wasn't sure it was a good idea for a multitude of reasons. Number one being Lily's dad... the guy probably owned a baseball bat and would probably use it if he found Kyle there.
Even so, the opportunity to spend time with Alexis, and even spend the night with her was too good to pass up. However, he drew the line at makeovers and girl magazines and had an escape plan all ready should those things pop up. He got to Lily's and followed Alexis's instructions, getting off his bike and moving around to the side of the house with the trellis. Looking up, he saw the window, and Lily's face. "I'm not Spiderman," he called up to her, trying to keep his voice quiet. "So if I fall from this shit, it's probably gonna hurt."
"Then don't fall," Alexis called back, popping up beside Lily at the window. "It's not that high. Just like climbing a ladder." If she'd been in his place, she'd probably have thought it was a crazy idea herself. Course, if a werewolf was chasing her, she'd have climbed up just about anything to anywhere, just to get away. "Be careful," she reminded him with a smile-- as if she needed to tell him in the first place.
Breezy couldn't help but laugh, though she muffled it with her hand. She managed to keep all Romeo jokes to herself, for which she was infinitely proud of herself. It wasn't easy. At least Lily's house made it easy, when Breezy snuck out the window she had to climb a tree.
"Don't whine, you big baby," Lily called quietly back without pity, hiding a smile. "I can climb that thing in my sleep with one arm tied behind my back. I'm sure a big, strong hockey player like yourself can handle what's essentially a wooden ladder. And be grateful it's not roses on that shit." She'd had to climb one of those once. She'd had puncture wounds in her hands for weeks.
If they'd been guys, Kyle would have flicked them off - good naturedly of course - but as they were chicks, he merely shot them a look and walked over to the trellis. He was athletic enough to climb, so he wasn't really worried about that part. He grabbed ahold of the trellis and lifted himself up, realizing it was sort of like climbing the rock wall at the gym. It wasn't very hard, though Kyle could admit having three girls watching made it a little nerve wracking, and sure, maybe he wanted to show off a bit. But knowing his luck, showing off would mean losing his footing and falling to the ground and landing on his ass. Once he got to the window, he gripped the frame to pull himself inside. "Really hope no one's been watching this," he grumbled.
"Why not? They should all be jealous," Alexis smirked. She wanted to kiss him hello, but again found herself not sure of how to act around the mixed crowd. It was so much easier when they were kept separate, but that wasn't to say that she wouldn't become comfortable later. She just had to figure out how this worked. "Have you had dinner?" she asked, then looked to Lily. "Think we can sneak him tacos?"
"I'm videotaping it for blackmail purposes later," Lily informed Kyle with a straight face, though she was joking. She shut and locked the window behind him. "There was a hidden camera in the tree behind you. But no, no tacos tonight. Mom made empanadas, beef and cheese. I hope you guys like 'em spicy, though, 'cause she mixed in her green chile sauce." It wasn't traditional but it was the bomb. "But yeah, she made 'em because they're not that messy, so we can just grab a huge plate and bring it up here."
Kyle shot Lily an amused look before wiping his palms together. "I think that was a pretty impressive climb," he said. "If I'd fallen, then yeah I'd say you could blackmail." He glanced at Breezy, the flagpole girl, and smiled. "I'm hoping you're in a better mood now than you were the other day?"
"Oh, well, I'm not out for blood, but the night is still young." Breezy answered easily, before grinning a bit. "I have to be optimistic, there are rabid animals on the loose and that means Aaron could be mauled any second right now - even as we speak. Life is good. Bring on the empanadas!"
"So long as you're not out for our blood, I think we're fine," Alexis teased. "So should we run down and get the food and come back up?" she suggested. "Kyle can make himself comfy-- should we move down to your room?" Alexis wasn't sure of the best way to do this, since she really didn't know if one of Lily's parents were likely to pop in at any point. She didn't think leaving Kyle for a long period would be good, though, since he might get bored and leave, and that was the last thing she wanted.
"Dude," Lily said, "we're not planning a strategic invasion here, just sneaking a guy in. My brother did it with his old girlfriends all the time. You go get Kyle settled in my room, Breezy and I'll head downstairs and grab dinner and some sodas. My mom's down with sleepovers, she'll be cool if we want to eat in my room. Relax, I've got this."
Breezy grinned and slung her arm around Lily's shoulders. "You sound like an old pro ho." she teased. "It's like we were separated at birth." she sighed. "Let's go. Have fun, guys."
Alexis laughed and rolled her eyes, her hand sliding into Kyle's as they disappeared down the stairs. "We will," she grinned, though she didn't think they'd take too much advantage of a few minutes of privacy. She turned to Kyle with a smile. "Thanks for coming."
"No problem." He still felt kind of weird about it, but he figured there were worse things he could be doing than hanging out with three cute girls. He pulled her close to kiss her properly now that they were alone for a few minutes. He pulled back and grinned. "I think that I must really like you to actually agree to this."
"Really?" she grinned up at him, her arms wrapping around his waist as his did hers. "And here I thought you were just trying for a really awesome threesome or foursome, or whatever," she teased. "Glad you're not getting your hopes up, cause we'd be too much for you to handle." Plus, she wasn't into that, but she figured he knew that.
"I think there might be way too much pressure with a foursome," Kyle joked. "I'm more of a one on one kind of guy anyway... I think I'll need to focus all my energy on just being around three girls without any guys with me to balance out the power." He hugged her close and kissed her forehead.
The gesture was surprisingly sweet and Alexis smiled as she hugged him back. "I'm sure you'll manage," she said, looking up at him. "Wanna get settled in then? They'll be back in a minute and Lily's mother is an amazing cook."
As if the words had summoned her, Lily returned bearing a platter laden with empanadas - spicy, delicious beef and cheese-filled deep-fried pastries. Totally unhealthy but super extra delicious. She'd loaded Breezy up with four cans of soda and some sour cream for those who couldn't handle the full bite of the green chile sauce. "Dinner," she announced, swooping into her room with a flourish, "is served."
