Werewolf vs. Hunter, Round 1
Who: Gabe and Kavin
When: After School
Where: Gabe's house
Kavin didn't think that Gabe would be at hockey practice today. Not after everything that had happened. Both the bite and Chrissy would probably be more than a little heavy on his mind. So despite the snowy blizzard, after he'd dropped his bag off at his house and Jeri off at work, he headed on over to Gabe's. He needed to talk to him about the whole thing. Let him know that he was willing to help. He parked his car out front and knocked. His mother answered the door and lead him to Gabe's room. Once she'd left him at that door, he reached up and tapped lightly on it.
"Come in," Gabe called, thinking it was his mother. With his shoulder hurt, he'd been banned from the ice, at least until it had begun to heal properly, and that meant his afternoons were free. It felt weird to come home right after school and do homework, a reminder of what had happened just by default. He turned as the door opened, surprised to see Kavin there. "Hey," he said, setting down his pencil on his desk. "What's up, man?"
Kavin came in and shut the door behind him, brushing a hand through his hair and trying to think of the best way to approach the topic. "I uh... wanted to talk to you about... fuck." he sighed. "Nate told me about... the... well yeah. And, I wanted to talk to you about it." he said, figuring the best way to go was direct.
Gabe scrambled to think of what Nate could have told Kavin that wasn't about being bitten, since he was certain they'd both agreed this wasn't something people needed to know. He remembered Nate wanting to tell Kavin, but Gabe was pretty sure he'd only agreed to testing the waters, not blabbing the whole damn secret. "What did Nate tell you?" he asked, deciding to be straight-forward before his mind ran away with itself.
"About the bite." he told him. "And don't be pissed. I mean he kinda had a reason and see... I can help. A little more than you might think I can but in order to explain that I kinda gotta tell you something and you gotta swear on God and everything holy that you're not going to open your mouth about it to anyone. And just for the record, I'm not opening my mouth about your stuff either."
"What the fuck?!" Gabe said as he rose from his seat, torn between panic and fury. Telling Gabe not to be pissed wasn't exactly calming. And telling him he wouldn't tell wasn't reassuring either, not when he'd heard it from someone else who promised not to tell. "He had no business opening his mouth to you! I don't care if you swear to God, it wasn't his secret to tell! How do I know you won't fucking do the same?"
Kavin let him yell. Hell, he probably would have yelled too. He would have yelled. "Look. I know you're gonna be pissed so be fucking pissed but see, in less than a month you're going to turn into a blood thirsty killing machine and unless you wanna accidentally get out and have a hunter after your ass or kill someone you care about you need to just slow your roll and hear me out. I'm not going to tell anyone, I have no reason to tell anyone and if you want some fucking collateral just as proof, I'm a hunter. I usually leave the country to hunt people like you that do bad shit okay. Now if you run your mouth, I'll run mine and vice versa, but see, I'm not the only hunter out there okay? There are other people just dying to get a werewolf pelt and I'd like not to have you die if I can help it."
There was really only one thing that got through to Gabe out of Kavin's shpeal and that was that Kavin was a hunter. Everyone's warnings came back to him, especially Dean's, pointing out how they could be all around him, how easy it was to put people in danger. He'd have never guessed it was someone he knew, and it didn't matter that Kavin was saying he wouldn't hurt him. He already had his bases covered, or was at least trying to get that way, and he wasn't going to work with someone that would kill him if he didn't know him. "Get out," Gabe said, jaw tense as his hands closed into fists. "Now."
"Gabe." he said, keeping his voice calm. "I didn't come here to piss you off or freak you out but I wanna help. I'm not going to hurt you. If I wanted to fucking kill you I could have done it already, alright?" That probably wasn't the best thing to say so Kavin retracted it. "I didn't mean that." he said, shaking his head. "I wanna make sure you stay safe and I wanna make sure that everyone else stays safe okay?"
"I've got it covered by people I can trust," Gabe said, not willing to say any more, since Kavin might hunt them down as well. What if he decided Claire was a threat? Or Drea? The idea of anyone wanting a coyote pelt made him sick to his stomach. "I don't trust hunters." It was that simple. It was the first thing he'd been taught upon learning about the supernatural, a lesson that had been hard learned, that had put other people in danger. He wasn't going to forget it just because it was Kavin.
"You're fucking stupid." he told him. "You should trust me, hunter or fucking not. I'm in the know, I know what to expect and I know how to get around without other hunters being suspicious but see you're not listening to that. You're freaking out and thinking I'm going to kill you but I'm trying to make sure you don't get killed. You don't have to trust me. You fucking don't have to do a god damn thing, but when you get out on the full moon and you fuck up and kill someone, or get yourself killed, I'm not going to give a shit. I tried." This hadn't gone the way he'd wanted it to. Things just had to fuck up didn't they? "I'm still not going to open my mouth. I'd like it if you didn't either. To anyone. And I mean it, Gabe. Please, don't open your mouth." His tone went back to normal at the last bit of that. He was practically pleading with the boy. "No one. Please."
"Are you fucking bipolar?" Gabe asked. "Don't threaten me, then ask me to do you a favor. And don't expect me to trust you while you sit there and tell me what a monster I am and how you'd kill me if you didn't know me. You tried in a five minute period that was more of an altercation than a conversation. You walked into my house and told me how I was gonna fuck up if I didn't listen to you." Gabe ran his fingers through his hair, so mad he was shaking. He took deep breaths, trying to force himself to calm down as his heart beat loudly in his ears. He had to calm down, fear that this might cause him to change reason enough. Otherwise, none of this would matter and he'd get a bullet to the head today. "I won't say shit to anyone," he said, trying to force calm upon himself. "You can't tell me how to feel, Kavin. You're not the one who was bitten."
Kavin immediately felt guilty and it showed in his face as he nodded. "I know that." he said, his voice calm as he too forced himself to stop being so pissed. He tried to think of how he'd feel if the shoe was on the other foot and he was in Gabe's position. "I'm really just trying to help and I know that you might not believe that, but it's the truth. You're not the only one that could get hurt in this okay? You think other hunters wouldn't just love me trying to help you out? I've already got enough enemies before this, but I don't want you to go about it wrong and get hurt or accidentally hurt someone else is all. And I'm sorry I threatened you I'm so fucking frustrated and I know that's not a good excuse but..." he sighed and brushed his hair back away from his face. "I'm really bad at this and I don't know know how to go about any of it. I've never been in this situation but as far as hunters go, you're right, you shouldn't trust them. Wherever you got that information, it was right, you shouldn't. But they're everywhere, Gabe. Obviously. Me."
"How about you let me ask you for help, rather than you trying to force me into it?" Gabe asked. He was still pissed at the way Kavin had approached him, and even more pissed at Nate for telling Kavin in the first place. If Gabe had known the situation, he would have told Nate he had it covered from other angles, but apparently Nate felt the need to run and tell Kavin as soon as he could. Somehow that didn't fit with the argument that Gabe shouldn't tell anyone. Gabe had a better idea of who he was comfortable with than Nate did. "If you wanna help, right now I just want you to drop it and not tell anyone. Including Nate. I don't care what he already knows; he doesn't need to know anything else, since he can't seem to keep it to himself."
"Okay." he sighed, really wanting to press it more but he wasn't about to go off on another argument. "You just don't have a lot of time to play with." he told him. "So if you do decide you can trust me... you know my number. If not, at least take my advice. You gotta be in a safe place before the full moon comes up. You won't be able to control it. You won't be able to stop it. I know it sounds fucked up, but a cage.. or something. That's all I can really say and if you need help I'm around, and I won't say anything to anyone. Not even Nate..." he sighed. He had the feeling Nate was gonna get his ass chewed out as soon as he left Gabe's. He wasn't sure whether to feel sorry for Nate or annoyed that he'd even brought him into the whole mess. "I should probably go.." he sighed.
Gabe knew that Kavin was trying to help. The problem was how he was going about it made Gabe feel more threatened than he had with anyone else. "I have a month," Gabe said. "And I'm not completely in the dark. I'll let you know when I need help putting a cage together." Or something like that. He wasn't ready to deal with that part yet, and it only upset him the more people pushed it on him. It had only been a couple of days, but it felt like years. Chrissy hadn't even been put in the ground yet. "I'll call you," Gabe said, "when I'm more up to talking." Right now, all he wanted to do was bite Kavin's head off, and that wouldn't do anything but make him feel better.
He just nodded. "Alright." he said, honestly a little glad to be through the argument at least. "I'll talk to you later then." Kavin said as he backed up towards the door. "Thanks. For not saying anything. That part really is important. I'll... yeah, bye." he told him, opening up the door and taking a step out of the room.
"Bye," Gabe said, sinking down onto the bed as Kavin left. He needed to keep straight who knew, needed a lid on the secret that couldn't get out... and yet, people just kept finding out. He'd been okay with telling those he trusted, but how long would it be before a hunter came knocking at his door? Nate didn't seem to understand how vital it was to keep his mouth shut. That was something he'd have to remedy immediately.
